Even the visual inspection should be shibby as long as you still have cats/O2/EGR. It isn't illegal to turbo/SC an engine. Am I wrong?

I agree with you. I am just clarifying the 25+ year old thing @slow95z stated above. You're not exempt from the law after 25 years, it's that your state isn't regularly checking. In South Carolina they don't check emissions at all but that doesn't mean you can legally remove your emissions equipment.

Plus, Ryan has already said it's being developed in a way that it can be fully removed and put back to stock. For the folks who'll actually buy this kit removing it for the CARB inspection probably won't be a big deal. Honestly, if not for California, this kit should be built with a real turbo manifold and down pipe, not a J pipe off the stock manifolds. The J pipe seems to be a consideration for the California folks and if so, I'd think it should be optional for them.
 
I've liked everywhere I've been in CA. My daughter lives in CA. However, your laws/rules/taxes...ugh. They're all keeping the "man" down!

Soooo, how would the turbo manifold be different? I remember not grasping the significance of some of that discussion many pages back.
 
It's just a routing of exhaust gases issue. With a 'J' pipe the exhaust exits the stock manifolds and then makes a hard 180 degree turn back to the turbine. With a turbo manifold the turbo connects directly. Here's a pic of a 1fz turbo manifold found via the google which pointed me back here to MUD. :cool:

California ruins everything. Seriously. CARB is the California Air Resources Board IIRC.

Really though, a dedicated turbo manifold is the way to go. Been researching them a little myself and if you're seriously interested in this thread joining the turbo land cruiser fb group would put you light years ahead(and I know that's been said ump-teen times already).

That is the treadstone manifold I used on my truck. It works, but it's not great. Using the stock manifolds with a J pipe is a superior solution in my mind.
1) stock manifolds to J-pipe has the correct firing order to properly spin a twin scroll turbo
2) longer narrower primaries/secondaries makes for more exhaust velocity. Exhaust gasses don't mind turning a corner as long as it's a smooth corner. Just look at all the high-dollar equal length manifolds on the market that make a ton of power--they look like a ball of snakes.
3) Probably most important, it fits properly and is super easy to service/install/uninstall and uses the as much of the OEM equipment (which is better built and better designed than anything aftermarket) as possible.

This is all just my opinion on the matter.

By the way, that manifold you posted requires significant modification before it will even bolt onto the cylinder head.

Yeah, I don't have FB. Not looking for anybody. Don't need to be found. I still get a newspaper and have a land line.

"I had a long conversation with SEMA garage. They have the OE info from the TRD SC that can be repurposed for the turbo. So long as everything remains exactly as you’ve detailed (OEM computer, stock fuel pump/injectors, stock exhaust, O2 placement, etc) then I stand a better than good chance. I have the test vehicle but just need everything else ready to go. They will help with the paperwork and everything else. It will likely take 6-12months and cost somewhere around $12-18k."

It is AWESOME to check back in and see the progress! You guys are doing a great thing here :cheers:! The initial plan for my '97 was to go FULL ASS, and after looking at this kit, I'm thinking of not and getting on board. It sounds like a wise plan to do the turbo setup and get that working and get used to working ON it, then bump up to the stand alone and such. Now, I may have missed this, but, would one be able to get this kit without the j-pipes and down-pipe? I would like to fab my own down pipe and go with the 6 boost manifold. If not, I understand, I'll just get the full kit and mod later. The option would be much appreciated, though.

Oh I guess everyone already knew Wits End/Joey/NLXTACY was behind the turbo setup. I thought for sure that was going to be a much bigger reveal. Ha!
