Oh ya, we cleaned inside the 3rd member (ring & pinion assembly) when we painted it and again before install. We also inspected it and no chips or damage to the r&p. No damage found in the diff and looks good other than some birf soup before cleaning. E-locker got cleaned (degreased) new o-ring on the diff housing to locker motor, tested for both locked and unlocked in the diff before final sealing it up with FIPG on the cap. Axles and birfs looked appropriate for mileage, repacked them after cleaning with moly. The axle shafts slid in the housing as you would expect for a new housing, like butter! Set trunnions and wheel bearings in the heavy side of specs for “larger tires” but with the new housing and spindles for my experience they always come out this way on first setup vs rebuiling with used parts.

Got it going as far as drivable at 6pm today. Went to the car wash and spent an hour washing it top and bottom.

So, first impressions after not driving this Cruiser in over 2yrs...

Last HDJ81 I drove (pushing 2yrs ago) that was an auto, full time 4wd and a stock turbo it was A LOT more sluggish than this 81. This one actually has good power and trans is not sluggish at all. Trans shifts smooth, pulls well and doesn’t search for a gear. I only had it up to about 50mph but the trans is like new so far.

Caster, steering, suspension, ect feels great but it does need an alignment, will get that done next week.

Checked turbo today for end play and lateral play, it’s like new! No play to speak of.

Also like I say, I am a full disclosure seller.

In this pic you can see a "mod" we did to the high pressure power steering line. On the stock steering box with the funky solenoid it uses a banjo fitting. I have worked on other Cruisers that use a banjo on the box but it has been awhile. We worked on the box and banjo for awhile but couldn't get it to not leak with a banjo. The 105-series box uses a compression fitting on the high pressure (and low pressure) sides for hoses. They do match the banjo in thread size and pitch, hence trying to make it work with no mods first. Any ways, the stock 1991 1HDT high pressure line is in great shape and not wanting to wait weeks to chase one down out of Japan we decide to simply modify this one. Since the 105 box matches the 1FZ 80-series compression fitting wise we simply cut the compression fitting off a used USA spec 80 high pressure line, cut the banjo off the HDJ81 line and tig welded the 1FZ compression fitting to the 1HDT high pressure line. We also sleeved it so it is even more bomber. Worked well and no leaks even under max load with the front locker engaged. You can see our tig welded section and sleeve we also tigged on top of the joint circled in red here.

Now if you ever need to change it out for a new one, you simply buy the 1995 and onward 1HDFT high pressure line in RHD. It will be a bolt in replacement, verified by my 1995 HDJ80 here at the shop. This one we custom made should be good to go for a lot of miles and years yet, rubber is not dry rotted or cracked.
