Seatbelts rebuilt with new webbing and working on the doorcards. Also put in rear side markers and removed the vampire connectors and the trailer wiring harness that was hanging in there.

Doors are mostly done. For now at least. Its been a long time since I made door cards and I went at it very differently this time so I will see how I like it later. At the moment they are easy to make so I can change it later. I got the dome light working and added a passenger side trigger switch. Tested the blower for the heater and it works, got the shifter area sealed in and took it on a little drive just out side the neighborhood and then decided to come back and set the timing... which helped a good bit on power. I have about 8 gallons of fuel in the tank but it seems to think i am at about 1/8th of a tank and also seems to think the engine is never getting up to temp, which I feel pretty confident it is. So i might have a ground issue with the cluster or the sending unit isn't reading right and temp unit is bad..... which could be since it is the original.

I noticed the turn signal says Toyota in the molding and seems like it's in great shape...is it an original Toyota part that survived all this time?

One was broken and one was good still but I replaced them both so they would match. The lenses are still available from toyota and were about 10 dollars each. Interestingly enough they are cheaper than after market ones I could find on ebay.

First full up. The new temp sender unit got the guage working properly. The fuel level sending unit did start moving with a full tank but unfortunately it just reads 3/4 full. I'll figure that out when the bed comes off .

Having no balanced tires was good for my back but I probably should get those fixed before I vibrate all the bolts out I forgot to tighten

Not making fast progress but making some.

Finished getting brakes installed ended up using a skp SKBB041 dual diaphragm brake booster. Kinda clever with couplers. Rebuilt the LPV with parts from an 80 series LPV. Hopefully it works and doesn't leak. Got started on one fender and have another waiting. Going to weld up some of the holes that were left from some previous body work.

After doing a little driving around today I have to say this combo of the 4runner master cylinder from @dohcdelsol93 the Dual diaphram Booster and my fancy spacers, paired with the fj40 (1980) rotors and the v6 calipers.. this thing stops very well.

Im glad it's working out for you. My set up with the 4 wheel disk brakes stops better than our fancy disco 2 with all the ABS nonsense. Really fun rigs to daily!

Not a good match and even worse my welding. But we can't have rust holes in the bed

So time to deal with rust. I am getting the impression after working on the doors but it seems like filler is used by toyota everywhere on this truck.

So progress has been as slow as usual but this past weekend I put down some epoxy primer and getting it ready for filler work. I might be out of warm for the year and not be able to get paint and clear coat down but I did seam seal and role in a very poorly colored bedliner. It doesn't matter that it is ugly but it is just something to remind myself that it isn't a show truck at all.

Started on the tailgate repairs... found cigarette butts and a porkchop bone in it. Not getting it carbon dated but I really hope it isn't 40 years old. Fixed the busted spot welds and gave the whole thing an acid bath to hopefully neutralize any rust I couldn't get to.

Yesterday while it was in the Low 70s F, I got filler work done, primer, paint and clear put on the bed. Still need to finish up the work on the tailgate. I prevously had to do some welding as the top portion was loose and some spot welds were broken. Decided to throw in the tail lights and the plate to take it for a spin. and was reminded I have play in my steering. I need to figure out where it is, but assuming it is the steering gear box as everything else is new. I'll have to see what adjustment is available in that gearbox. I didn't do a full rebulid on it, I only replaced the seals so that it wouldn't leak so it is possible that it is pretty warn out or that in 79 they didn't care so much about some slop.

I also found the plate on the bottom of my intake is leaking coolant so I am going to have to address that soon. I didn't use a block off plate and just used the original one, but it seems the blockoff plates available now do accommodate the heater function. Still haven't put on the first 500 miles so I will soon be checking the valve adjustment.

I have a lot of little things still to do. one of which is to put in a functioning sending unit in the fueltank as it consistently thinks I am out of fuel.

If you have an inch of play in the steering that's probably as good as it gets with a used box.

There is a drag link adjustment and steering box adjustment. Use FSM method or you may wear parts and your box out worse.

Rebuild fix it? I am not afraid to rebuild anything. I just was getting tired of rebuilding all the small things before getting to drive and see what all needed rebuilding, so i Just replaced the seals and hoped for the best. The drag links I think are tightened up pretty well, but that is something worth double checking as I haven't done much with them since they got all cleaned and reassembled besides me adding grease right before the first drive.

There's an adjustment on the steering box to take out play but only tighten as much as the FSM says. I think the procedure was jack up front axle, tighten adjustment nut and back off 1/3. I'd try that first and if you have about of inch you're golden. Don't over tighten or it'll ruin the gears and rebuild boxes don't get replacements from what I can tell. Steering box setups like this won't ever be like a rack and pinion.

Good info. Thank you and Yeah I should have opened the FSM first. Doing body work has made me dumber.

Welp going to have to fix a bunch of runs in one area for the clear coat. Not a hard fix but I could have avoided if I would have had more light in that corner while spraying.
Got he rear bumper in. Not big in the chrome but since it is a toyota original I probably won't paint it. Maybe just dip it.
