Someone posted a pic a while back. Can anyone point me to that? I think they painted the whole thing black, then abraded the paint off the letters(?) Looked awesome. Thanks for any help!

VHT crinkle black:

Prolly not exactly what you’re looking for but it’s black and polished aluminum. Ish.

Thanks! Couple of questions... How did you get the letters silver with no chipping around the edges? Would the Toy logo have been too difficult to silver, given the curves? Looks like a pebbled paint texture--any issues with dirt buildup? What are those v/c fasteners? And last but def not least--where did you find that s/c? :)

This one was mine. Very similar to @Saito. I also used VHT crinkle black. For the letters I used masking tap, then cut out each letter with an exacto knife. Only dirt buil up I had was when I went wheeling. . .but everything was dirt then.

For a SC. I might know a guy, but it's not cheap.

Love these black-and-silver covers. So, how not-cheap is not-cheap? I mean, there's not cheap, NOT cheap, and NOT CHEAP!, if you know what I mean...

It's not mine, and I'm not sure if he has one (or more). Probably looking somewhere between $5k - $7k. I can ask of he has one if you want, and if he does I'll link you up.

Yikes. Let's just say I'll keep you in mind, should that become a possibility. Thanks for the offer!

It’s all dirty AF right now. Moab redish. Made Cruise Moab finally earlier this year. I painted over the lettering and the filed it and then followed up with emery cloth. Got the SC online like 7 years ago. Can’t recall where but it was a dealership. Had another member here telling me if I didn’t pick it up to tell him where it was so he could buy it . . .and he already had one sitting NIB. That’s also who I got the intercooler from. Don’t see him around much here any more though. I put some flanged socket head cap screws in but only up front and they’ve got Nord-lock washers under them. Still torqued to spec after six months of use.

I did similar with mine. I'm try to find a pic.

Screw masking that up! Too hard to get clean lines, and a clean edge on the finished paint.

Paint the whole thing after THOROUGH PREP.

After paint has had time to harden, use a flat/ firm sanding block, soapy water and something like 360 grit wet and dry to carefully sand off the paint on the tops of letters.
After the bulk of the paint has gone, go up to 400, then 600 grit. Go to 1200 if you want it to be really super smooth.
Don't use a sanding sponge. You want the block to be hard so it rides on the tops of the letters only. A sponge will wrap down the sides and you won't get sharp lines on the paint edge.

Then clear coat.
Clear coat needs to be something suitable to paint on raw aluminium. Most are not.

I never got around to clear coating mine.

There’s a couple of different ways to go about it. My favorite (and I think easiest) is once you get the valve cover good and cleaned, use your finger to smear a thin layer of grease over the top of the letters. Use gloves and be careful to not get it anywhere else. Paint it, and wait for it to dry 100%. Take a paper towel and wipe it off. No sanding, no taping, no sweat. I use VHT header paint matte black, and then clear coat. It holds up pretty well.
