remember, in Japan they recalibrate to tire size so MAYBE the gear was changed over there before you changed it here ... really messing with the theory.

I can't read Japanese, but here is what ToyDIY says.
The gear I pulled out was stamped 6 x 18

1985 BJ74
GEAR SUB-ASSY, SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN (MTM)
33403-69065歯数=18, マーク 18:6, N=18, 215SR15 TIRE

1985 BJ70
GEAR SUB-ASSY, SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN (MTM)
33403-69075 N=16, MARK 16:6

According to a tire speed calculator, going from stock 29" tires to the 33" tires should yield 8MPH in speedometer reading, which is what I experienced when I put in the different gears

Have you taken it for a wheel alignment yet? If so what is the castor angle?

I never took it in. Did the NASCAR string alignment. Drives nice and straight, no pulling or hopping or bump steering in turns. so I guess it is good enough.

I have put about 300 KMs on it

Still have been struggling with the 4WD. Checked everything.

VSV works fine
Plenty of vacuum.

If I took the lined of at the transfer case, I could get it to shift in and out fine, so the diaphragm was good. When it was in 4WD, it would turn off with the button, but not on. So I thought I had a bad hose, , but they were all new.

So I started tracing back from the Tcase. Found the problem------Steel line had a piece of crud in it.

Fixed!

Now my right power window quit working :( More chasing.....

On the bright side, I charged the AC and now have a nice cooler ride!

What's a "power window"?:hillbilly:

gotta get rid of the top
the AC still is really nice with the top off.
(cold air sinks)

Having starter issues. Not that it doesn't work, but that it cranks HARD. Batteries are new, 900 CCA each, fully charged, all new double "OO" cables.

On fully charged batteries, I maybe get 6 revolutions before done. If I don't let it glow, then it isn't going to start.

I haven't checked AMP draw--not sure where or how to check it. I'm thinking of loosening the starter bolts to see if there is an issue of it binding. I don't believe there is any way to shim anything though, like american gas motors. but it could be tight, as I remember there was not an issue before I put it back together.

Suggestions welcome.

Does the starter stall? Is it hot to the touch after one of these attempts?

What do you mean by "cranks hard" is it struggling to turn over?

I don't know if you would call it struggling. It turns over, but slow like a low battery, which it doesn't have. Decreases fast to not turning at all if it doesnt fire in the first 3 revolutions. I guess you could call it struggling, like it is turning a tremendous load.

take the starter in and get tested
also, you have the HEAVY ground from the starter to bell housing bolt over to frame ground attached, correct?

Maybe :) can't remember.

I'll check it out. Not excited to pull the starter out again

Beauty....

I did have a "00" cable from the starter to frame.

Pulled it out and took it to a rebuilder to test and rebuild if needed. Pulled 380 amps UNLOADED. Spec is 90. He said he didn't even know how it started the truck at all!!! It would have melted anything less than "00" cable

Hope he can find the parts!!!!!

Wow. That's crazy high.

Got the news on the starter today. MOTOR IS TOAST!!! Nothing can be salvaged for rebuild. He did say he MIGHT be able to source one for about $400 exchange. I guess we have to accept that if he can get it done.
