This spot was rusted through two layers (ourside and structural inside). Even though you don't see it but both are cut out and replaced in layers.

Next shot is an example of some metal work under the door. Trying to align everything is just PITA. But I am sure I can do better on the next door

And this is how it looks on the outside - you can compare it to the rear door that is not done yet

Really don't have much time to work on the car lately. I've been experimenting with different paint stripers as the whole dumn car is painted with bed liner on top of the original paint. I am not sure why somebody have done it, but it pisses me off.

Finally, I've got my hands on some air plane coating remover from local body shop and it is really good.

Btw, does anybody know if there is a trick to remove glass from the rear doors? It is fairly easy on the front but rear ones, looks like you have to pull out a pin or something

Progress so far:

Finished rear right door.

And here how it all lines up:

There is some grinding work left but overall I am happy with result.
Also it appears that right side doors where in much worse shape then the left ones. Hopefully I'll be able to speed up now

Keep up the good work! and the good pics! I cant wait to see forward progress

I love how misleading the title of this thread is. It suggests the thread is about a diesel swap or something when really it should read: "build your own landcuiser from scratch"

LMAO :) maybe I should rename it. But what can you do, you can't get diesel Land Cruiser in Canada not rusted.

Seal the H-E-Double Toothpicks out those seams and welds. Moisture is the devil's way of ruining the fun.

Yeah, I'll inspect everything after the major components are done - a "touch up" phase:)

haha! He is doing a great job building his own cruiser from scratch then!

It has been a while since I've posted here since I took a break from the project as the builder got married. I must say thanks to my buetiful wife for allowing me to lock myself in the garage for a long periouds of time right up to the D-Day and still marrying me. She probably fall in love with the cruise as it is a part of my life as she is now. I love you honey

PS: I've promised to have pink seat covers:(

haha right on congrats dude! My wife gets car sick like mad in anything, but for some reason she's fine and loves the cruiser. AS well my 4 year old daughter loves it too! lots of windows to see out of and room for her toys to do ride alongs as well!

I am having my fender patch created as we speak.

Just today, I had to take some 3/16 inch pipe, and weld in the two shock studs from the old one. The tube broke off a few weeks back. I did not mind the bounce..that much.

As for tomarro, I am having a long patch that will replace what was cut out from the fenderwell.

I had to finish this saga with door as I only had left rear one to do. Luckily it was the easiest one so fat. Overall I've noticed that left side of the car is in much better shape then the right one.

Here is a shot of the door's cancer cut out:

And how it looks after welding is done (sorry for crappy pictures):

Just need to work on it with a grinder and it will be like new

Also I've started to prep the body for paint, so agly paint gotta come off.

Here is the hood getting ready for some gently touch:)

Started to work on rear bottom hatch. Man it is really screwed up. Started by striping down the pain and preping everything for welding.

Any ideas how to make the bottom piece

I've been thinking about it. Since bottom of the hatch is so rusted I don't even have a reference line.

Can somebody take a measurement from a not rusted hatch for me as shown in the picture? That would be appreciated

doing my corrosion repairs for the wheel well as we speak!

Prep work for left fender took for ever but I couldn't do much in -30 type of weather we had over the winter. Fabricated an inner fender and planing to complete it after the body is back on the frame - that is when I am going to deal with quote panels as well.

Wow, your corrosion is worse then mine...I think on one side vs the other. I just got done cutting out most of the difficult corrosion issues behind the wheel well. I cut into the floor and removed the piece that covers the cab mount which I think in your picture, is the same area that corroded out and you have patched the that section of the floor with sheet metal. Water got into it, and ate a hole though the side panel. Right now in the process of creating a patch to rebuild it up and then ....with luck..hopefully will be done with that section Thursday. Last is to weld in the entire length of patch for the wheel well. I CANNOT wait to get this fixed. Sick of water being spit into the cab of my truck.

Are you talking about this cab mount?

I had to redo about 10 inches of it:(

Good luck.

How's your rear bottom hatch look like? Any chance you can take a measurement for me?

How many hours into this so far? Amazed by your work in bringing this cruiser back. MIke

I've stopped counting at 300+ but if I were to guess probably pushing 450 ish. Just looked at the old pictures and oh man, I must be one stubborn dude.

Глаза боятся, а руки делают:)
