It seems easy until I start doing it. I have limited use of my right hand so everything is a PITA to work on.
Need to gather everyone for another work day.

All I need is a lift, beer and some guys who want to hang out. I think right now I only have beer.

Ok diesel heads. Help me figure out this ring at the end. Sounds like some kind of bearing is going out.

I have some play in the turboshaft but it's not hitting anything.

Idler bearing? That’s just a guess. Maybe try the hose to the ear trick on all the accessory pulleys?
Maybe pull belt and turn them my hand.

Found it. The alternator fan is broken. Spins freely.

My memory is failing me. That alternator fan shouldn't spin without the pulley turning it, right? What a pain in the ass.

Try with an impact.
Mine doesn't fit in there. I'm about to head to San Antonio in a few. Looks like a problem for next weekend. Every week I tell the wife "Now Big Red is ready and we can go anywhere". Every week Big Red makes me look like a liar.

Is the alternator even charging the battery. I don’t have AC so my belt goes around the alternator pulley completely. Looks like your alternator only contacts the belt on the bottom.

Yea it's charging. Installed a larger pulley on it a few years back, so it can get some kind of contact.

While big red is getting the turbo oil return line relocated, I decided to do some cleaning up around the yard. Used the Tacoma and the old trailer I bought a few years back with the intent of building it up. Of course that never happened because I ended up buying another trailer that was already built for overlanding.

Now I'm debating on whether to sell it or restore it completely.

I also did some work on little red and put up some shelves. Cleaned out the garage. It's no longer a mess.

Today I got to see a B17 and a B25 in person. Saw them fly and nearly bought a ticket to fly on one. I decided I rather go watch the formula 1 this year instead.

This thread is in desperate need of some Big Red updates. We just took a mini camping trip from central Texas to Palo Duro Canyon up in the Texas panhandle, and I was hoping to take Big Red to see how it would perform and if any issues would come up. The Mrs. had other plans so we took the Tacoma instead. There were some pros and cons to taking the Tacoma and instead of Big Red photo op, I figured I can do a comparison between the two platforms. Yes, Big Red is 30 years old and is not stock, but in many ways, I would still prefer to take it over the much more modern Tacoma. Below is a small list off the top of my head about the Tacoma. A lot of this is seat of the pants feel and subjective. A scientific apples to apples test might very well prove me wrong.

Tacoma Pros:
1 Cold AC, was over 100* every day.
2 Comfort, Satellite radio
3 Carries more gear
4 The truck does not overheat no matter what you put it through.
5 Cruise Control. Never complained about needing it until I drove Big Red from Big Bend.

Tacoma Cons:
1 Horrible gas mileage. We averaged 11.5 - 13 MPG while towing the trailer. We filled up 5 times for an approximate 920-mile trip.
2 Feels underpowered. I can't seem to tap into the 278 HP when I need them.
3 Way less torquey than the 4BT. Towing from a dead stop is horrible.
4 Rear drum brakes. I feel like Big Red might be able to stop better while towing the same size trailer.
5 It's a capable 4WD car, but I'm not as comfortable with it, seems flimsy in comparison.

Ok picture time.

My Tacoma poser pic. It was a little more complicated to get it in 4lo and diff lock. Not that it needed it, but was messing around with the system.

The picture doesn't do the angle any justice.

The canyon drops almost immediately, so all lower gears were used. Not sure how the automatic RV crowd do it without overheating the brakes.

It's a little fuzzy, but it was really really hot on Saturday. I don't know how accurate the temp is on the gauge, but when we did get reception, it showed we were at around 107 and there was no shade anywhere. Disregard the mileage, that's without the trailer in tow.

For those of you who have never seen the play TEXAS. I highly recommend. The mountain walls add to the sound effects. This was the effect of combining water mist, lights and Murica.
