Here's you public service announcement: ALWAYS CARRY A BUNGEE CORD WITH YOU.

I was about 50 miles south of my house when I felt a thud and the pedal went soft. At first I thought I had a boost leak, so I pulled over to fix it. What I found was the throttle cable bracket had broken off AGAIN.

So here I was trying to figure out how to get the cable on the right amount of tension so I drive home. I rack my brain for a minute when I realized my son dug thru the tool box in the rear and was playing with a bungee cord.

So here's the best I could do with it. It worked well enough to take me to the Cummins dealership then home.

Sadly they don't sell the bracket I'm looking for. So does anyone know where I can source this?

Would like to not have to rely on a bungee cord for round up.

Can it not be salvaged or has it finally met its demise?

It broke once before, I'll try to see if someone with welding skills can fix it, but I rather buy a new one and not worry about it for a few more years.

Maybe ask the several folks in the 80 section that are doing Cummins swaps. I believe the Diesel Adapters kit uses a different throttle linkage. Don't know if it uses that part or not. People may be scrapping them.

Ya I feel like rebuilding that piece is doable, I've had to make and modify similar pieces before. It can be done just need someone with some fab skills. Glad the bungee worked out though

That part looks like it has been customized. Is it a custom piece or a cummins piece?

It came with the engine as far as I can remember. It broke off once before so it was reinforced when it got welded back together. Having a hard time finding a replacement online so it may be a custom job. The Cummins dealership don't sell brackets so it's hard to tell.

Which part broke off?
if you look at the third pic. the right side where it's been welded once before. Thats the part that bolts to the engine block. Thats what broke

Post some better pictures of the part and where it broke. Looking at the failure point will tell us if it was a bad weld or if the metal thickness is insufficient or something else happened. That way when you repair it again, it won't break.

Is that the part that broke on the way to Big bend?

No this part is just forward of the part that broke off on the way to big bend.

Here are more pics.

The closer I looked at it the more I realized it was a custom made bracket. I drilled two more holes and tried to reroute the throttle cable, but the power steering hose was in the way. I guess I need to have another one made. In the meanwhile I'll be driving with a bungee cord.

That's definitely custom. Rebuilding it with thicker metal would be better, but they did not choose a good mounting point for the bracket.

I gave the bracket to a friend of mine. He's going to try to make two new brackets out of thicker steel. as far as the mounting points go, I think there was no other choice, the space is very limited.

It's been a steady rain here with some thunderstorms for the past few days. I've been itching to take Big Red to some light wheeling in the mud but didn't want to do it while I'm still using a bungee cord for a throttle bracket. About two hours ago I got a call that my bracket is ready and i can pick it tomorrow. I asked how late they will stay open for, and if I could pick it up tonight.

Here it is.

It's thicker than the old metal one and it fit in perfectly.

I didn't have time to spray paint it, so I just mounted it really quickly so I can drive home and get changed for work this evening.

It gives much better response now and is beefier than the last bracket. So hopefully this will last a few years. On my way back I did pass by a mud trail in the rain, was fun, but I should have aired down the rear airbags at least.

On a separate note, my parachute hammock showed up, I can't wait for round up.

I came home last night to find a box at my doorsteps. It arrived 2 days earlier than I expected, just in time for Round Up. I've been on a spending spree lately buying parts for the other cars and some camping gear that I figured why not just go ahead and get an awning for Big Red. After all the blazing sun is my number one complaint when you start heading towards west Texas.

I had to take a quick trip to Home Depot to get some U bolts to attach to the roof rack. It took me about twenty minutes to mount by myself. I wasn't hard at all, just awkward cause of its length. Can't wait to try it out.

Just got back from Round Up. Met some awesome folks and put faces to the handles on this forum.
