Toyota, from what I remember had to widen the headlights to adhere to some international standards.

It is true.

Take a round bezel and try and set it over the head lamps of a square bezel bib with headlamps in it.

You will see the difference.

If you're one of the people that's in this for resale value, you can't ignore the fact that the square-bezel trucks 'led the charge' in the drive-up of value.

But, even with 3:70s, they couldn't outrun the rust.

Yep, I have both. Square is a little wider.
 
Got back from Daytona so added a couple pics. Bottom Black is from a 1/79. Top white is from 12/74. Top pick shows mounting hole difference. Next pic shows Square Bezel is about 3/8 to 1/2 inch wider at each light hole.

I guess with cutting and narrowing you could make it work but why would you?
 
Up here in Canada "square bezels" usually come with a little perk! haha
