square bezels also allow for adjustment of the headlights without removing the bezel....
which means.....yes a square bezel can also be upside down (you cant adjust the lights if its upside down)
you need to change the complete bib to go one way or the other.....
I may have been AUS(or Euro) reg's that made the change ....I forget which
square does not use the rubber spacers(for 4 screws), round does
can still buy new OEM square but only in chrome.

They both give the 40's a distinctive look, but I prefer the square.
gotta have both really 
in all honesty, I think the round bezel looks the best or at least the most classic.
Mark....some of the square bezel models avoided the rust.....my 82 somehow did (maybe because the original owners, who's widow I got it from, last name happened to be Swearingen, no relation I am aware of but it does make one think)

Maybe somewhat off topic but I always new when a 40 was coming towards me at night by the spacing of the headlights.I still notice it with the fj cruisers.

Up here in Canada "square bezels" usually come with a little perk! haha
Rust?
Ya lets go with that, all cruisers have rust.
As far as I know it was a European spec. Heard that from a few sources over the years.
