Hi all!

So, im trying to make up my mind on what to do with my suspension on my 45. Its my daily driver and although it does see some 4x4 use, it will never be hard core 4x4 and 80% of use is on tar, all be it, very bad tar with pot hols that can swallow hatchbacks.

Ive been really toying with the idea of putting in 80 series coils. i know however this is a ton of work and money to do right. so the real question is, is it worth it? or can i do other suspensions that can give me more comfort than im currently getting?

Easiest would actually be an 80 chassis. Biggest mods are engine set back and front cross member relocation [also set back]. Other than that they're virtually made for it. Do it!

im very close to it. have an 80 series chassis all lined up. just waiting for the current owner to be done with it

My vote would be for coils in just about any configuration. I have both a 96' 80 series and an FJ40 and the 40 is fully coiled. Absolutely a night and day difference over leaf springs when it comes to street driven comfort.

Thanks for the experience!

Old man emu suspension rides pretty good, probably the best for off the shelf suspension. You could also call up deaver and have them make you some leaf springs with the ride characteristics you want. Springs are springs, whether its coils or leafs. Coils can ride rough just like leafs can ride rough. It just depends who made them and if they know their stuff or not. It can be tough getting a coil spring suspension dialed in as well.

so would you say that you could get similar levels of comfort from an OME setup? im weighing up cost vs how much work and down time is involved

My wife's car has coils ... my manly man 40 series has leaf springs

Real men ride on leaves :)

That said I have soft ride skyjacker springs :meh:

Lots of guys run the OME ... never really complaints it's a great product
how do the skyjacker springs affect lift? its something i dont want to compromise for comfort

you can use longer flat springs from a 60 serie and place them over the axle (SOA) or longer springs from 1/2 ton truck ,
and you can even remove some leafs for a very soft suspension

ive heard of removing leaves... does it affect the lift of the spring pack much?

Skyjackers are ok... ome is the Cadillac today

Yes I would say OME has a comparable ride to a decent coil setup.

good to know. thanks for the info. im very much drawn to OME as there would be less work involved. but its gonna cost me alot more money to go OME than coils. so its money vs time

Old man emu is good specially once it has a few Km's on it but if I had the money I would put and 80 chassis under it
