Best phone mount?

This is probably my favorite mod to date. Made a small bracket that wraps around the area between the two vents. Welded a 1/4" thread nut on it to use with the ram mount hardware. Took one of the "blanks" on the dash and turned it into a usb port that connects to the back of the stereo. I used the Quad lock mount ( Adhesive Mount - Twin Pack ) and adhered it to the ram mount and my phone. Just a 22* twist and the phone comes off. This is nice as I can use all the quad mount hardware for my other activities like biking and jogging.

I really like that, I was thinking of replacing the vent on the right with a mount of some kind but that is an even better idea

It'd be really nice if there was a way to swap the clock placement with the vent, then use the clocks location for a really secure anchor point for a ram mount or something. 3D print a new bezel maybe

Wrapped mine a few weeks ago and really happy. Probably spent more than I should have, but I love the way it turned out.

1) Got a cubby block off plate from Hicks 3d $37 -

80 Series Accessories Dash Bezel | BH3D Printing and
Series 80 Dash switch bezel / any interest???

2) Drilled holes in the blanks and shaved 1/4" off the top and bottom of my Ram Mount diamond Base, added a sheet of aluminum backing plate : $7.50 - RAM 2.43" x 1.31" Diamond Ball Base with 1" Ball Unpackaged - RAM-B-238U | RAM Mounts

4) Mounted the Ram Mount X Grip to it $30ish

I believe you just won the internet.

Here is mine, custom made by BH3D

Here's a few more pics if anyone is interested in making one similar to mine. It was pretty easy overall, just need a welder to get the 1/4" nut attached, a drill, a grinder and a few strategic bends. I just used a scrap piece of steel I had laying around so not sure what gauge it is, guessing 22... Went with the 2 piece Otterbox Defender case for the phone. The adhesive that comes with the quad lock mount has survived a year so far with some very hot summer temps and lots of 4-wheeling, still feels as tight as the day i stuck it on there, and it gets used multiple times a day. The quad lock on the phone is pretty low profile and only sticks out past the case about a 1/16th of an inch.
The paint used to match the "oak" dash color is Rust-oleum Textured Bronze #7226... it's pretty darn close to being a perfect match.

I like this simple yet sharp idea! I vote you make these and sell them!

Cheers,

I wouldn't call it the best but it's what I use and it's rock solid. Coming from product development for the film industry I have/had access to all kinds of crazy stuff.

I just used something we developed and repurposed it. It's a V-Dock system used to mount recorders, drives, monitors, etc to film carts and off the sides of cameras while filming.

The Dock portion I attached to one of those brackets off to the side of the AC. I VHB'd the male V to my iPhone case. Now it's just snap in and press the plunger to release. You can't get it to accidentally release. It requires pressing the plunger in the V-Dock.

I think it's awesome how everyone has come up with their own unique solution! After looking at all of these, I wanted to have the phone sit pretty high & also not block the vents if possible (my copilot requires good ventilation!). I went with the iOttie Easy One Touch 3, their brand new product for larger phones. It's real easy because you can insert the phone with one hand & it automatically snaps shut to hold it securely. Also the adhesive on the base is real solid.

Ditto. I have ProClips on all of my vehicles. I remove the phone mount and move it from rig to rig as needed. Dash mount stays put.

It's so easy to install that even GF installed one in her 4Runner. Then she installed one in her mom's subaru as a Xmas present.

I'm not a fan of glass mounts as I have windshield sun shade that are used in the summer.

One thing worth mentioning is that I have the universal cell phone mount and been using it for few different phones now, including Iphone 6. All phones have soft outer cases. FYI.

Steelie. My buddy actually helped design and build the product (and the company). They work pretty awesome, and you can also stick your phone to your hood, a park bench, fridge or any other metal object.

Yep...got a steelie on mine...if you don't mind having a small piece attached to your phone, these things are the best...and no permanent modification necessary to the vehicle...they're plenty strong for an iphone as well and hold up to wheeling just fine...

Update: My iOttie was good while it lasted, but I've been thru 2 of them already. They were nice enough to replace the first failed unit for no charge, but I don't think I'll go back for a 3rd. Looks like the factory hasn't quite nailed down QC on this new larger mount, as the springs holding the arms break after several weeks of use.

I'm still curious to see more of the ProClip, especially from anyone that has a phablet (iPhone 6S Plus, Samsung Galaxy Note, etc). It's not too clear from the photos on their site how much the base of the holder will tilt. It seems like with such a big phone the holder would have to tilt a bit to get around the curving arch of the dash, so I am wondering how that would affect viewing angle towards the driver. Also I'd like to see where exactly the base is mounting on the dash, as their drawings are not too clear. Anyone have this system installed that can take a few photos for us?

Thanks guys!

I'm curious what everyone uses & recommends for mounting your phone. I currently have a Kenu Airframe+ (Kenu) in 2 other vehicles, which I love...but due to the unique dash & vent geometry of the 80 it's not such a great fit. I'm thinking the best solution might take advantage of either of the horizontal surfaces above & below the center vent. Thoughts?
I use a steelie Amazon.com: steelie car mount
