Just replaced my battery from OEM Panasonic to Duracell SLI27M

Old Battery
Toyota Japan OEM Panasonic 105D31L with 650 CCA and 20hrs capacity of 80Ah. Vehicle was build in Oct 2020 and delivered to me Nov 2020, so I got 4 years and 9 months out of it. I also installed a diesel power products PPE Battery Heat Shield in 2022, unclear whether this did much however not expensive and does not hurt. Temperatures in Houston are up there so I would say heat eventually killed the OEM together with some short drives by my wife. Be nice to have gotten 5 to 6 years out of it, not terrible either. Under hood batteries just die, my 2014 BMW535d has it in the boot and the OEM Varta lasted me 8 years and 11 months, nice!

Pic of the Panasonic and the electrical setup which is a) for the anderson plug and a winch I use on the roofrack for our 18ft long Hobie Tandem Island sailing kayak and b) to have a permanent and relay operated (engine running) fuse boxes for accessories (for to be installed airlift 74000 pump to my airbagman bags and the 12.5 LRA and any future projects)

New Battery
SLI27FM Duracell Ultra Lead Acid battery with 840 CCA, 20 hr capacity of 70Ah. Could not find a Lead Acid rated at 80Ah matching the Panasonic. Do not want to go AGM under hood as high temps will just kill it as well as the OEM alternator not setup to charge it properly. Cold Crank Amps look good compared to the Panasonic (maybe the Japanese measure this different from the US, do not know), so we will have to see how this works out. 3 year warranty is something. Hope to get 4 years out of this battery or otherwise I may go to Interstate or similar lower cost thereafter (maybe a $50 or so difference).

Again used a diesel power products PPE Battery Heat Shield (gold color thing around edge of battery), since I have it anyways.

Good Looking wiring under your hood! I hope your new battery lasts well past the 3 yr warranty. IME, bAtTeRIeS pLuS bULbS doesn’t hold up their end of that agreement when it matters.

Yes, that is the woven type heat resistent tape over the wiring having their own jacket, just for extra protection.

TruStart from Toyota Group 27F was $119 during 25% Black Friday Sale , picked one up from Elmhurst Toy n IL, 84 months warranty is hard to beat. Duracell at Sam’s Club and Interstate at Costco are 36 month warranty.

OEM new alternator Made In Japan was about $330, got it from Sheehy Toyota in PA with free shipping. Remanufactured alternator was not much less, just above 290. All during the same BF sale

Also replaced my alternator with new OEM, only way to go.

I sure as hell hope I never have to replace it again, man that job sucks….

After seeing how much of a royal PITA the job was, I felt much better spending the extra $ for the piece of mind the new one should last 200k like the old one did.

Note: old one worked perfectly fine, but had to replace PS bumped so replaced the alt as a “while I’m in there” item

True Start and Costco Insterstate are Exact Same Battery only Sticker & Warranty Different. Both made by Johnson Controls.
I found this out when I changed out Avalon to Instersate and could not tell them apart from Sticker.

I currently have a Costco Interstate in my Corolla from 2019 which makes it 7-8 years old.
*Have a Noco so Running it to Failure.
**The Denso Alternators must have Very Good Voltage Regulators.
I have only Checked the Acid Levels every year and add bottled water to just over Plates. Takes about 3 mins.

Mine is still going strong on 2010 but I’m probably on borrowed time, My starter went kaboom early spring and that was a 9 out of 10 on the PITA scale.

Yes. I’ve read that also, and that’s also on my list.

Might farm that job out. I’m getting too old for this s%t 😂

I think most brands are made by JC, I believe in PA but as casing could be the same core plates lead content could vary. Resting voltage below 12 would stress your starter (less voltage = more heat to generate amps) Also weak battery would stress your alternator. Batteries are cheap 1/3 cost of the new starter or alternator Starter job took me 9 hours. Alternator job is another curse , So unless you are on the original Panasonic - check your voltage AM after cold night and if below 12 - maybe a good idea to swap it out sooner.

My wife drives an Avalon Hybrid 2014 - great car, replaced her original battery during fall sale, paid around 250 but to my surprise replacement was original made in Japan Panasonic. Battery was packaged like a tank - double boxed, double bagged, with HD molded trays and and liquid absorber. I was so impressed I even snapped some photos. Toyota started cutting down on parts packaging lately but not on the batteries.

Battery sticker said Panasonic but manufactured by YUASA.
