Got the RMA from GROM so it is going back today. After reviewing the installation, guide and available features, ended up ordering Naviplus.
I installed the Naviplus about four years ago and it has worked well for me. Once or twice a year, I’ll go buy some interference that will interfere with the wireless CarPlay connection and the connection will reset. All the steering wheel buttons work and everything works as desired. I would just like for it to automatically default to NAViplus instead of having to select each time I start the car. Also, I would like it if it would go to the low speed cameras which it does and then revert back to Naviplus once the low speed cameras shut off. Right now it goes back to Toyota navigation instead of Naviplus. My third complaint is it defaults to the last cell phone that was connected rather than searching for any cell phone that might be present. When my wife drives, we have to manually select her phone and then manually select mine again. Pretty minor complaints in my opinion, though. Otherwise it’s worked great for me for the last four years.

just watched the beat sonic video. it looks really easy...

Acknowledge this is just venting but it is still crazy this is what needs to be done. The amount of auxiliary components is close to not making it worth it. I don't want to have to worry about routing 5 cables away from hvac vents and sticking a box in place with double sided tape if we're being honest...massive miss by Toyota to not add OEM when they updated the screen. With that being said I'll give it a shot...

I'm sure it works well...but I knew there'd be foam tape involved in this install when I saw both those boxes. Introducing rattles that you then have to eliminate in your 80k truck sums up this project perfectly. Still not ideal solution.

Edit: that dangling USB port I do not like either. Oem means oem!!! That is not oem!

From what I saw, Naviplus supplies a usb for one of the button blanks to left/right of steering column which helps the OEM look.

The numerous cables and connectors are just part of the game unfortunately. Grom wireless CarPlay was also 100% unusable - wired was fine but the real deal breaker for me was the steering wheel pickup/hangup buttons not working.

IDK - they give me 7 days for a refund, we shall see! Grom got the boot in 24hrs 😂

I did start thinking about how I could do something like that...

My rants over...I struggle with the steps involved to make something as neat as I would like it to be for something you get in a base corolla of the same year standard.

Edit: just read through this thread again. Seems like repurposing the under the dash switch is doable with the adapter. Good to know it can be done pretty cleanly if you take the time. Still mad at you Toyota!!! :(:(:(:(

There is an adapter available so the USB port can run to the USB plug on the console by the shifter. Where the auxiliary input is located. I have that adapter, although it would be easier to look through the threads to find the information on it than for me to figure out where I got it from years ago in my personal records.

Asked about the steering wheel controls for the GROM. Got this back in a few hours.

Dear Scott Fulton,

Hi Scott,

We do support the steering wheel controls.

The track control and volume will be active while in Carplay but there are 3 functions that are rerouted from your current use.

Call answer, hang up, and voice command work as follows:

While in Carplay hold track skip for 3 seconds to summon Siri
While call is incoming, quick press track skip to answer the phone
While call is incoming, quick press previous track to decline the call
While streaming audio track skip and previous track will work as they normally would.

GROM supports both wired and wireless CarPlay. I’m also going to replace my cigarette lighter with a USB-C and A plug for wired.

Thats exactly how i have mine setup. It was close to useless "Wirelessly" but works decent enough wired.

Backup cam annoyance is my only current gripe with my 2010 and Grom

Steering wheel controls work fine with mine

This explains why the normal answer and hang up buttons didn’t work for me.

Yes, answer the call w the skip button 😂

Oh well, Naviplus shows up today - will see how that goes.

I have my cellphone bluetooth setup to run audio to the carplay bluetooth, and have phone call audio/mic to the OEM Lexus bluetooth. That way the factory answer/hangup buttons work, and the phone call audio also seems better.

Ok so I installed the Naviplus system. First off, it’s got way more clutter etc because it’s 2 boxes. Install instructions are a little vague but a couple emails later and we were good. Main issue is the PDF they sent had the dip switches one way and they had to be another way for the 13-15 LC.

Once all that was done and the car buttoned up I checked it out for function.

First off, I noticed that the screen somewhat distorts the shape of circles. It does not perfectly fit the factory screen aspect ratio for the 2013-2015 models where as yhe GROM unit did. This may not be a deal breaker but it is worth noting. Also, overall the whole system just runs slower than the GROM.

Second, the call buttons on the steering wheel do work but only if you are paired to factory Bluetooth. The main issue I found was that if you were trying to listen to music and then you wanted to pick up a call, it would mess up the connection because the phone would then try to take over the audio versus keeping it going over the Bluetooth which was annoying. They did not have any answer for the situation and I didn’t press them, I figured it was one of those “things”.

Lastly, one of the things I took for granted with the Grom unit was that it had arrows you can press to toggle to the different screens on CarPlay. The resistive screen does not do well with swiping as many have noted, and the arrows on the system eliminate that problem and do work quite well.

Anyway, what I’ve learned through trying a couple of these that none of them are perfect and they are not going to work just like a factory installed system in most cases. I’m just going to throw the GROM back in and use the skip buttons to answer calls 👍🏻

Thanks for this. I have a Naviplus unit I have been holding off on install for a year. This confirms I will hold off longer or indefinitely!

Yea, I mean it’s not bad/horrible by any means and it does work for adding “CarPlay”. I would venture a guess that most if not all of these sorts of solutions are going to have some sort of “odd” caveat. I was going to try the EC Off-road unit, but figure it’ll be more of the same. Also, being that EC and Naviplus are both AU based, return shipping is expensive and not very convenient. Naviplus was cool w the RMA FWIW since I was within the 7 day window.

I added the Beatsonic solution to my 15 IS350 and it is pretty good. They did however exclusively use factory Bluetooth for all audio and calls to retain full steering wheel button function. The phone does the “CarPlay” stuff but all audio goes back through factory Bluetooth. That seems to be the way to make it all play nice. Not sure why more don’t go that route? IDK 🤷‍♂️

why no beat sonic for you this time around?

Which FW are you running? For the longest time I had had issues with mine - especially with AA and trying to answer calls. I initially got a new FW from GROM and that addressed a ton of the issues, and then since then they're released a newer version that also seems to be working. The version they sent me was lex6_83 and they've released newer versions since...might be worth checking if you haven't touched it in awhile.

Update:
I just re-installed the Grom unit on my LC. If you leave your phone paired w/factory radio then the buttons work completely normal. If you try to run it all through the Grom unit w/o factory Bluetooth then you have to use the alternate buttons to pickup/hangup calls.

Just got notice they (GROM) dropped a firmware update for all units that were ordered before May 1, 2024.

I just installed the most recent version of the Beat Sonic Apple CarPlay module product in my 2019 200 series. The project was daunting initially with so many disconnected components from my otherwise pristine OEM vehicle, but the you-tube installation videos are detailed (the most recent is about 1 month old). I was worried about the dangling USB cord as well. I left it plugged in to the module, but I left the female part of the connector wound up below the glove box above the passenger side floor board cover. That way, I can easily access it if I need it, but the beauty of this module system is that it is wireless from the get-go. I feel like I have added many more years of enjoyment to this daily driver. My biggest peeve with this vehicle has always been the outdated audio/wireless technology - but the 200 series is just too solid to trade out for a lesser quality truck with an updated fully-integrated CarPlay system. The Beat Sonic kit was a good compromise - and I do believe that the value is there for my intended use. Hands-free Waze is critical for the daily use of my 200 series in this southeast Texas urban jungle. The tech support from Eric at Beat Sonic was outstanding. I had a few questions during the install and he was very quick to respond and to follow up to ensure full functionality. The key mantra if you plan to install yourself is "Patience, young grasshopper". Watch and re-watch the videos and take your time.

Got the GROM VLine V2 installed last weekend. Bluetooth connected right away and works well however enjoying my favorite music with a little extra bass has highlighting that I have a blown speaker.
