The radio station I listen to pose this question a couple weeks back. Who did you see perform before they were famous?

I got to see 3 rock bands. Halestorm, Shinedown, and Ghost.

Hallstrom is from Redlion and we saw their singer and guitarist at a local dive for free right before the went out to California and got signed.

Shinedown had just put out their first single. No one knew who they were. We went and saw them at the Chameleon club for $1.05 a ticket!

Ghost a sweedish metal band we saw on the 3rd stage at a music festival as we were waiting in line for food. A different but good sound compared to other metal.

Joan Jett
Night Ranger
Cheryl Crow

Saw the first two at 6 Flags when I was ~12. Got to actually meet Cheryl Crow just before her first album dropped at a record industry meet and greet in Owensboro, KY. I was down for training for a record store I was working at.

Dave Chapelle and Jim Bruir. Many many years later and Jim Bruir was my neighbor a few doors down in Chester NJ.

Depends on what level of fame you're talking about. Saw tons of punk/hardcore bands in the early 80's that saw certain levels of fame.
Only three I can think of, quickly, that most may have heard of, would be:
Suicidal Tendencies
Agnostic Front
Misfits

I actually have photos from all those shows.

Saw Cyndi Lauper open for the Ramones, only she was with her band "Blue Angel", or something like that. They were horrible, and were on the receiving end of my pocket change.

Now that I look at the list above, that was all in 1982. A good year, indeed!

Saw Uncle Floyd open for the Ramones at Great Adventure in 1980. It was my first show. @jonheld probably knows who Uncle Floyd is, but doubtful any Pennsylvanians do.

I feel sorry for you.

Good stuff guys. Saw tons of punk/hardcore stuff years ago. Flogging Molly is probably the only band I saw before they actually became "big". Most of the others stayed small, faded away or were already well known (Rancid, Mighty Mighty Bosstones etc).

The Clutch Fortunate Son cover was awesome

This one has an 80 towards the end! Slow morning at work :flipoff2:

Clutch! Still love me some Clutch...

Still one of the most underrated bands. They've been pretty much on constant rotation on my playlists for a long time. I won't claim I was in at the ground floor - I got in around 2001/Pure Rock Fury.

If my FJ40 had a stereo, Clutch would be blasting through it most days.

Saw Phish at The Bayou in DC in 1991 with 200 people. Saw The North Mississippi All Stars at Starr Hill in Charlottesville with like 100 people. They never got huge, but a lot bigger than that.

Yup.

Saw DMB at Lisner Auditorium in 1994 in front of about 800 people. Then I saw them open for the Grateful Dead at the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl in Las Vegas in 1995 in front of 38K people.

Saw Devo at a Howard Johnson’s lounge in Burea Ohio, summer of 73. Saw the Guess Who at a sock hop in Seattle fall of 71. James Gang opened for 3 Dog Night at Akron Rubber Bowl summer of 72. Billy Joel spring of 74, Albright College, last but not least- saw Los Lobos at a wedding in North Long Beach in 75 or 6

You've been around, my friend, for sure.
