Am I the only one here that doesn't care about hacking the floor? As for the gas tank, why not just replace the main tank with a sub tank? It will help distribute the weight better and give you room to make the upper rear links the same length as the lower rear links. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that would help with articulation?

that is the answer but...
all you need is a tank made to take the factory fuel pump-unbolt it from the oe tank and put it in the rear tank. also a harness extension for the fuel pump. new lines for the tank. a new filler neck and hoses. brackets., etc..... it may be easier to put a narrower tacoma tank or other cheap tank in the oe location. but the issue with hacking up the underside of the cab is still going to be a sticking point for most. a planitary box, and especially one that was clockable, would fix that problem. a 3.8:1 atlas would be nice also.

you guys are crazy! :)

I like the thought of lower gears, but dang, that is alot of work and money for more gearing. There have only been a few times i thought the stock L range was not low enough.

I look forward to reading about one of you guys hacking up your 80 to do this.... other than wrench!!

I would be right there with you. It would not slow me down one bit to do exactly what you are suggesting. As far as articulation goes, I don't see it helping at all.

I'm there w/ you, b/c it would make a Big difference in how I'd wheel. I wouldn't mind doing a triangulated 4-link in the rear if I was going to replace the gas tank, heck, maybe just tube the whole rear end :D (the stock 80 rear actually articulates very nicely (be nice to ditch the panhard)). but when i think of all the above why not change the axles too? coilovers? snowball snowball snowball, lol.:D
But as Christo and others have said/say, in reality I don't need any of that to wheel 95% of the trails out there, but it sure is fun indulging in the ideas and seeing them come to fruition.

3-link front, a relocated panhard (so the tie rod can clear it), and hydro assist to help turn the 40's are next. :grinpimp:

All that holds me back from this is my lack of confidence in my body work skills. A re-located gas tank isn't that much trouble...and I don't think you'd need some of the stuff Dusty mentioned. If it affected drive-line lengths...again, something that's been done a million times. Now if someone made a 'kit' for dummys to chop and raise the floor, I'd be all over it.

Then you are not wheeling hard enough trails :D

back at you christo :flipoff2:

here on the east coast, many times momentum is your friend, not gearing like you mountain goats out west.

If you would convert to a manual tranny and use a toy box from marlin mated to a 60 split case would that fit???
Or how about a gm v8 with a NV4500, toy box and split case.
Would either of these two fit???
Only asking because manual trannys are not as long as our autos (i think :meh:)

I'm thinking that with the BlackBox, if they make it work for us, would allow the t-case to be clocked down enough to keep it out of the body if you have ~2" bodylift. In that case, I would jump right on it and deal with modifying my crossmember or putting in a different gas-tank or all that good stuff....it's the hacking into the body part that isn't all that simple and seems to be the biggest down fall (since you can bolt in a different gas-tank) to the Mark's box.

If not in the amount of articulation, it should help with how the axle will articulate... Less "flex-steer" and more linier. I could be totally wrong, but that's what it seems to me... :flipoff2:

The snowballing is what keeps this sport fun! LOL... I have thought of coilovers in the front, but I don't want to run a tower into the back cargo area, so it will stay springs.

Make sure you do a detailed write-up of the 3-link and hydro assist... That's on my list too. I'm sure that 40's will be in my future as well (as long as I can get a good crawl box!)

Get under your truck and look at things....

Don’t you think that if moving/modifying the gas tank and lifting the body on the truck were viable options that people would have done this already and you would have read articles on this exact thing?

:wrench:
Maybe, or maybe nobody has done it yet. Nobody had done a Toybox/Orion combo when I did mine.

Moving the gas tank would actually be relatively easy. Toyota gave the rest of the world an aux fuel tank option. The OEM Aux tank would be located above the spare tire. Longranger sells an after market tank that fits the same position but is a higher capacity, you have to re-locate the spare. Lots of guys are doing this mod.

Really?

I put that assembly together in Fall of '04/Jan 05. Pictures were put on the web 02/05...

Interesting. You had the milling work done yourself? AA told me my Orion was the first one they modified to work with a toy box.

Your Orion probably was the first one that AA modified.

I modified the Orion pictured to work with the Toybox myself....case number 013. :meh:

But what is your toybox/Orion behind?

SM465 and a 2F.

What are the modifications?
