Are you sayin the 80s axles arent good enough? Look at ur crew thy run some big meats on these axles.

an 80 is way heavier than any truck we wheel, that is the killer

you drop 1or2Klbs off the truck, the toyota axles are quite tough with bobby long stuff. But, If I did it over again, I would have bought a d60 for the front straight from the get go even though my front end has held up very well, well all but the housing.

But i would drop coin for new gears for the inside of the existing case. And i would bet that alot more of the 80 owners would opt for this option as well.

I did. And it's the best mod I did to my 80. It instantly brings it up to hardcore status. I wouldn't even think of wheeling hardcore trails without one. Makes it 100x more capable!
All you guys talking of simple bolt in are dreaming. Go out and crawl under your 80 and see how foolish that sounds. There simply no room.

maybe i missed reading this in the thread, but educate me on the difference between putting in a crawl box vs. regearing the existing t-case?

What is the advantage to another box? I can see another box will give you "more" low range gear options. But IMHO, why not just put a super low gear in the tcase and you are done?

in the 80 tcase there is no such thing as "super low" gears. the marks 3.1 gearset should be at my door this week. i tried last month to find a set of rockhopper gears that are supposed to be a little lower but no dice. there is no such thing as 4.7 gears for the 80 like there is for the mini guys. so if we want to go real low its either a new tcase or a Marks crawler box or a planitary type doubler.

unless someone comes up with a whole new tcase for the 80 there will be a lot of cutting involved if we want to go low.

kyle from NWF is the only party with much interest in the project. i have an extra tcase on the way i may give him. depends on how much i like the 3.0 gears. Marlin is willing to take another look if someone will give them a tcase/tranny. their new 4.7/3.4 adapter used on the tundra 340 auto may have promise for us.

the bottom line is that neither of these 2 potential builders is interested in the 80 enough at this time to go out and get their own trannys to do the work. thats a bad sign

i should stop web wheeling and get the marks box and be done....

Please send kyle your extra tcase :bounce:. if all they need is a tcase to figure it out or make a set that's awesome!! unfortunately i dont have one or i would send it!! unfortunately i now it make take some time but hey at least someone will be working on it! When the suzuki samurai had little or no aftermarket it came down to someone( Tim Hardy)in there garage to make a prototype. now suzuki has gearsets galore.

You have more ranges. 2.48 or 3.1 or combined 2.48x3.1 If you don't you end up with only crawler range and then hi-range, and that sucks.

What does clockable mean?
 
It doesn't matter how its clocked. It will still hit the gas tank and the floor if its mounted in front of the tcase. I worked with AA and even sent them an 80 tranny and tcase. It was just not economically feasible to make a new tcase for the 80. It was going to cost a fortune and like it was said earlier, how many 80 series guys are going to hack up their truck to do it. 5 maybe 10? Doesn't make sense.
 
mmm i still want a Atlas 4 speed in my rig then ill upgrade the axles
 
Am I the only one here that doesn't care about hacking the floor? As for the gas tank, why not just replace the main tank with a sub tank? It will help distribute the weight better and give you room to make the upper rear links the same length as the lower rear links. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that would help with articulation?
