atlas adapter for FJ80 rumor- (Is not happening)

maybe i should find some one willing to put a atlas 4 speed into my junk
 
Whomever ends up making SOMETHING whether an all new case or an add on box, has a minimum of 5-10 pre-order purchases and many more in the future given that pple are starting to wheel 80s harder.

Could someone comment on a range$$ for how much the R&D on something like this would cost to get a prototype made?
 
I used to just see fj 40 & 60s on the trail. Now I am seeing more & more 80s on the trail. U.S. Is finally catching on to what Australians, south Americans, middle easterners have been knowing that the 80 series is one tough vehicle from the factory. I believe that there is a global market for this. It is much easier now to get the word out about a new product. Especially with forums like this spreading the word.
 
Unless you are prepared to move the gas tank, modify it, and /or convert the rear axle to a center diff, the Atlas is not an option, neither is adding a 2nd box in-line. Now it is easy to say people are wheeling their trucks more and are prepared to mod their trucks more, they are just not prepared to spend the money. The Mark's case is out there and in it's current generation is really good. For a trailer queen or a trail only truck. It works perfect. I don't see people lining up to buy that.

5-10 pre-orders are not going to justify the expense of doing the R&D on this.
 
Well, what will it take? Is it more orders needed or more demand.
This seems to be an inevitable step in mods. There are already diff gear options, locker options, skid plates, intake & exhaust options, sliders , bumpers, awd to part time conversion, suspension kits, the only mod that is crucial & lacking is the transfer case.
 
Christo, echoing Len's post, about how many pre orders would it take to get something moving (in your opinion)? Wouldn't it be safe to say the the foundation in terms of quality and options has been laid and most of the R&D would consist of making it fit the application correctly?

I always appreciate you outlook and knowledge

But I guess you didn't see it there so here it is in it's repost glory:

Marks of Australia has the gearmaster overdrive unit.
Cruiser Crawler

$3500 Aus and it pretty much bolts in.
You'd probably be just as much for an Atlas II, an adapter, and driveline mods.

Edit: $3500 AUS is about $2257 at current exchange rates.

Christo Slee posted about the cruiser crawler on the first page of this thread, i was thinking he was talking about the gearmaster overdrive . i have heard of the gear master overdrive but not the crawler transmission. would love to see installation instructions! going to marks4wd.com it still looks like there is considerable modifications needed. instead of cutting floorboard the sit did not specify how much of a body lift would be needed. how much modification to the gas tank is needed?

Don’t you think that if moving/modifying the gas tank and lifting the body on the truck were viable options that people would have done this already and you would have read articles on this exact thing?

That is the point of this post to see how far people have actually taken this mod if they have taken it at all. The 80 series is relatively new to major modifications. That is why i posted this question because i have not seen anyone posted up very many, if any, modifications like this. That is the main reason i posted this in the hard core section and not the 80s series section. if someone you or anyone else has done this mod we want to know about it! :bounce: Need detals! modifying the tranny tunnel and the floorboard i am used to have not modifed a gas tank though. if it is something like pushing it back an inch or beating it that is fine. but cutting it and rewelding i would get someone else to do that.

You have to cut the tank and add a 2" body lift. Easiest way is to put a tank in the rear and run off that and remove the main tank all together.

Looked into that option any harder? Anymore details on what would be needed/what is available/what has been done? Roger Brown has a 1.5" BL, I plan to install that....think a BFH will get things the rest of the way there?







NWF, how much modification would be required with your unit? BL necessary? Clockable, right? Would a rear mounted gas-tank solve everything?
 
What I know and why I don't have a Marks Crawler (Yet!)

A Marks Crawler IS the best option at this point, BUT for the price (which is reasonable as far as the actual product IMHO) you shouldn't have to modify so many aspects of the truck.

I have a 2" body lift, but I would still need to cut around the center console and modify the floor to allow for the Crawl box to fit (with a 2" BL the crawler still sits 2" into the cab).

When you cut the Gas tank, you will only effect your fuel capacity by about 2.0 Liters (not much), but again it is all the work that has to go into it for the amount that you are spending on the Box (I don't want to weld on my gas tank, not easy to find someone who will, but I haven't really searched)

As Christo stated, the best option would be to relocate the Gas tank, maybe make your Aux tank your primary or just add a "fuel safe" or like tank in a different location. The benefit of a relocated gas tank/new one is that you can 4-link the rear and eliminate the panhard, but the rear of the 80 flexes quite well as is.

My opinion, as stated above is rooted in how I believe the average 80 owner views the Marks Crawler Box option. As someone said, if the Mods were not so Sawzall friendly, I don't doubt that MANY 80 owners including myself would have made the move already.

My personal position on whether or not to buy a Marks Crawler Box: I'm constantly teased with the "word on the street" that a "bolt on" box is on the way. This has caused my hesitation in buying a Crawl Box. At what point will I just give in? It's still pending. I would love a blunt YES, NO announcement from the industry potentials/leaders on the matter so that those of us who are boarder line on a Mark's box can get on with life, but I realize that the chances of that happening is slim. If I hit the lottery I'm just going to Pay for ALL R&D to have a Box made:grinpimp:
