i heard a rumor about an adapter from possibly advance adapters for an atlas tcase for an 80 series. does this have any bite to it?! has anyone heard anything about this !?!

if not, then maybe we should create a stir for one to be built;) i would get one. aftermarket tcase options for the 80 suck. so this is a necessity!!

Lenny, funny you posted this I heard a similar rumor at Surf n Turf. THen again I've heard a whole bunch of hearsay about Marlin coming out with a box for an 80, then Inchworm, now advanced.

A few of us (especially a bunch of the Nor Cal 80 bretherin) have been trying to stir that pot, always worth pressing on until we get one.

i think if we keep stirring the pot they cant ignore it! anytime potential customers want to BUY something the vendors will take notice.

who else is interested in this ?! post up!

thank you debbie downer :frown: just kidding. it is going to take a lot of interest and calls and posts for them to develop a product that they will, well , profit from. that the name of the game. it took forever for us to have a suzuki aftermarket and finally there is :bounce: there is a whole lot more toyota landcruisers out there then there were ever suzukis (samurais especially). so the vehicles exist to be modified, it is just having a vendor to supply what we want! the vendor that gets it out first will profit the most :)

Someone get Kyle a truck for the moch up or even a tranny transfercase.

My question is, does the a442 and a340(not sure of the model numbers) have the same transfercase bolt paterns?

Rob

I heard a rumor that the bolt pattern from a FJC was the same as a 80 series and if that is the case the plate is already made. Don't know how the tranny mates up to the t-case at all but one could hope that Toyota keep everything very similar.

We were working with Advance on this and we actually send them a tranny to look at the feasibility to do the Orion to the Land Cruiser tranny. We abandoned the idea due to the fact that we did not see the market for a single speed low range box for the 80. The Orion is the natural choice due to the locations of the outputs, but the issue is you will have high range and very low range and nothing in between.

The atlas is even a smaller market due to the center output. It does have multiple ratio's but the same issues are there as with the Marks Crawler box in terms of gas tank clearance etc etc.

The stock Taco tranny has the same output bolt pattern as a 80 series tcase. There are only some output shaft differences.

So...

The crawler box for a taco/FJcruiser would easily be adaptable to work with an 80 series.

It is nice to see that vendors are not only listening but responding to our needs, thanks Christo of Slee Offroad for keeping us in the loop.

I can understand that a multi speed case is nice to have but is it really necessary? my suzuki samurai has a incredible low range (6.5) that i am ecstatic about. The first reduction for the samurai what a 4.16 ratio that we were thrilled to have! You have to start somewhere! what is nice about the samurai tcase gears is that they also have a high range reduction as well. which kills the need for changing ring and pinion gears! Or gives you an even lower crawl ratio if you decide to change out the ring and pinion. i actually wish more t cases had that option :)

To tell you the truth i would be ecstatic if the 80 series had a 4.0 to 4.7 low range reduction gears for transfer case! the 3.0 that is out now is just not low enough to justify the cost.

Back me up here guys, do we really need multiple speeds in the tcase or will a 4.0- 4.7 lowrange gear or similar low range be good :hhmm: ?

You don't need multiple ratio's, but without it the market is limited, thus the economics of it did not make sense. It was going to take quite a bit of $'s to get this done, plus the investment in inventory once the adapter was made. We wanted to make sure it paid off in the end. We did not see the numbers.

Also, this was not going to be cheaper than to regear. I would say that anyone doing a crawler box would also regear due to tire size and retaining on-road drive-ability.

We felt that if this was not a direct bolt in, without modification to the truck, it would not work. Otherwise if you are prepared to do mods like gas tank etc etc, the Marks box is really the best solution currently available. And if you look at that, very few people have tried that.

The marks box you are refering to is the "transmission" from gearmasters, correct? how much modification to the gas tank is needed? If it is more than a few whacks with a hammer then I would agree that seems to be a pain in the arse. I agree for something that is $3500 and not a direct bolt in ...probably why not a lot of people have done it .

A regear of the ring and pinion is going to be needed anyway, especially if you want to get close to the 100 to 1 crawl ratio. my point is to crawl, the t case gears are needed as well. there has got to be a vendor or vendors hint hint willing to colaborate for the greater good !!! Almost typed that with a straight face

If thats the case then there would be a much broader market for the Black Box, I will call Kyle and get him to read through this thread and give his opinion on this idea.

As Sleeoffroad said, its a big challenge to fit everthing under the truck and will take some fairly large mods to make this work.

Me and Rob looked an a JDM 80 series for a short while while it was getting serviced, but I need a tranny and transfer on hand to pull patterns and dimensions off of. Also when we are fitting splines in manufacturing we need a fit-to that can be left @ the machine shop.

Would the 80 series guy's perfer to keep their T cases with a gear reduction box inbetween, or change out to an older split case or orion when doing the swap?

You will sell more if you do not make them have to buy another 1K worth of tcases...

IMHO, unless they specifically want to remove the AWD aspect of the truck, there is no reason to swap the tcase out.

Whatever requires the least amount of work :). i think, ideally, would be to have lower gears for the stock tcase. therefore we are not having to modify the gas tank, driveshafts, floorboard, etc. the currently available 3.0 is not low enough.

I would vote that getting rid of awd would be a side benifit...

i personally think that a lower gear set to put in the existing t-case of the 80 so we could keep our fancy AWD would be the ticket. Even if it was just one gear for L range.
