If they can make a 3:1 why cant they make a 4:1. I see more and more 80s on the trail now then ever. The only aftermarket upgrade lacking for the 80 is the option for lower transfer case gearing.

Ya how many are willing to drop 3k on a crawl box?

Removing internal metal seems to be the standard practice when installing lower gearsets in stock housings... just have to remove a little more ;)
LOL there would be nothing left!

As shared by our good friend from the land of OZ there is no way a 4:1 gear set would fit without cutting completely through the tcase. but would it be much trouble to have a piece welded to the case to fill the resultant hole? interesting thought. if someone will whip up a quick gear set we could give it a try

If that's the case then you could technically go even lower than 4:1 (not that you would want or need it), but it would merely be a matter of cutting a larger hole.

Never been inside an 80 tcase, where would the hole be in the top or the bottom of the tcase? if its the top probably need to cut the floor. if its the bottom.. bigger tires will get ya ground clearance back :D

.

I can weld...:D

I have been in the case and there may not be room for more cutting due to the location of this one part. cant remember what it was.

By the way, Mark's does make a low gear set for the HF2A/V xfer case, but is only a low gear set and does not at all modify the high gearing (which is in fact what a lot of people want--low gears with a better high end).

IIRC, the gear set does require grinding (as Poser said, it's a damn small case inside) for fitment. It runs about $1000 for the gear set.
