Well a Whirlpool refrigerator less than 6 months old on its 4 service call. They are to be calling me to replace it but I don't even want a freaking Whirlpool again. Should have never gotten anything other than Samsung.

calling JttmfT.....

Opinionated appliance rant after 30 years of home ownership...

Kitchen-aide makes a really nice mixer. Ours is 30 years old, works/looks new, but has made bread twice per week for 30 years. It's the s***.
Everything else they make is total crap. I've had 2 of their fridges, including an expensive built-in that in 10 years had at least 10 service calls, eventual full replacement of compressor and associated parts, which lasted exactly 2 years and failed again.

At least 2 Kitchen-aide dishwashers-total garbage, the last one lasted 3 years. Run away.

I even had a Kitchen-aide garbage disposal - you know the high horsepower model. When it went bad, it would shock you when you had water running, the disposer on and you hand on the faucet. I was glad I lived through that.

GE does not make quality appliances. I've had 2 of their built in microwaves. They last about 3 years and then still look like they work, sound like they work, it's just an illusion though because nothing get shot. The real ball buster though, is every 2 years they just slightly change the dimensions, so they don't fit in the old built in space. So you need to get your uber expensive cabinet maker to modify your existing cabinet. Every 3 years. No f%cking more. Found a Japan built Panasonic-and have had microwave peace for 5 years already. THe thing is a tank. I expect to get 20 years out of it. And you know what? I can still get one with the same dimensions.

GE dishwashers make GE microwaves look good. Door seals fail (in 1 year or less), controls stop controlling, they are just garbage. I will admit my last one was a low to mid grade version-maybe $600, but when I took the POS apart, the electrical parts looked like chinese clones of actual electrical parts but made from recycled GE microwave parts. Never again. It scares me that GE makes jet engines and locomotives.

Whirlpool-I have a fridge and washer dryer set I bought in 1990 that still work. They were actually made by Whirlpool by actual Whirlpool guys. The dryer has been repaired once ($100), the fridge once ($120 last year). I think new Whirlpool is made by Kitchen-aide guys so see above.

I actually like my Thermador range, at least for now. It's 14 years old, and I've replaced the ignitors twice now. Next time they go down, I'm not going to like it, because guess what--the f#cking bastartds no longer make the same style of ignitor.

The only appliance I really actually like besides the ancient Whirlpools, is our current main fridge. It's a Sub-Zero. I think it's made by the old Whilrpool guys. The inside parts are quality, It's set up to be easily serviced, the temp control is the best in any fridge I've owned. So far so good, but it's only 2 years old.

Here is the best appliance advice you will ever get...
Never install a built in refrigerator. No matter how sexy it looks it will be 5 times the price of a perfectly good freestanding model that is just as good.

Anyway, I thought I'd contribute to padiwan FJ60Cam's thread, and I can see a throw down between him and the now blue level yoda Spressomon on our next adventure.

The mixer you have was likely made by Hobart and rebranded by KitchenAid. It was built like a tank and designed to last several generations. Original parts are still available for those mixers, and you are fortunate to own one.

All consumer grade appliances you can purchase today suck...PERIOD.

Three of the four Kitchenaid appliances in our kitchen are broken to some degree. Total crap. I'd like to think we are gentle on appliances, but they have faired worse than the el cheapo versions in our Section 8 rentals where there's like ten people living in the house.

Yep, hobby of the wife and occasionally me.

So if everything in general is mostly crap, what are the brands to look at when buying new? We are breaking ground on our house this week and will be buying all new appliances.

Samsung? Sub-zero? Panisonic?

Gonna be doing the full gambit, Fridge, microwave, dishwasher, double wall oven and gas cook top. Appreciate the advice.

Buy the cheapest appliances that are aesthetically pleasing to your design committee (wife, girlfriend, partner, whoever...the one that's gonna bitch about how bad the ones you really want to buy look). When they fail (not if, but when), rip them out and supplant with an equally s***ty replacement.

We put in an LG gas stove about two years ago and very happy with it.

The Kenmore washer and dryer Lori and I got for a wedding present lasted 20 years with only one heat sensor and a few small parts for the washer along the way. We eventually had to buy a new washer because the tub had a rusted hole in it. I did JB weld it and got another year out of it! Wish I could buy more like that but they don't make em like that anymore.

Maytag washer / dryer bought in 1997 haven't been touched. Not once. Not sure who actually makes / made that brand, but they've been flawless.

Of course, I expect I'll be writing to this thread again within the week to say that Murphy has moved in and applied his law(s)!

We have the same kitchen appliances today that were installed about 23 years [or so ago] - even one of those awesome mixers that is older than that, it moved w/ us [C used to bake bread every week too - dropped off a bit lately]. I'd buy them all again in a heartbeat - in fact, thinking that we might relocate a few years back, we bought the dishwasher and oven when Riverside Appliances had a scratch & dent sale just to have on hand if we moved. Subzero fridge, Asko dishwasher [I replaced a switch once but it was simple], Gagganue oven & cook top [2 burners gas, 2 halogen]. A little painful up front but once and done while being dependable and nice on the eyes.

Low tech appliance comparison - sorta an appliance - a kitchen sink facet. I'm redoing the Moo-U Starkville house for sale and ordered an Elkay sink and faucet set that looked a lot like what I put in in 20 some years back at home. Things have changed; the faucet set is now from China despite the Elkay name and it arrived with a crooked brazed end that attached to some questionably shaky sloppy fitting water lines. Back it went for a full refund since the bent brazed connector could be called a defect.

Chicago Faucet - they still make solid bullet proof plumbing fixtures w/ good O-rings, face seals and pipe threads - no cheaply done plastic QDs in sight. They're like the 80 series of the plumbing world. Visual options aren't as broad as some brands, but they're build to last.

Love the delivery of replacement fridge people f'ing up my door frame. Great now dealing with getting that repaired.
Door damage - fridge.webp

Opposite experience with our then new (circa 2001) GE Monogram kitchen ensemble...total overpriced garbage. I'd rather buy a new vehicle than go shopping for household appliances...and I hate that process too.
