that works for me too. i just want to make sure that we are not rushed anywhere we go. Are there any fire ring areas in Truckhaven? Just would not be too much fun to camp w/o a fire. I would prefer to do some difficult trails. I agree that not all trails are diffidult as advertised. It also helps having the greatest 4wd ever to make things seem easier. If everyone is camping then we can not have to worry too much about time as we can always set up camp wherever needed.

Yeah, that's a problem. I can't remember how folks were setup in Truckhaven. I wasn't looking for firepits/rings. I agree, camping without a fire would be lame.

I'll know Friday night. :hillbilly:

Couple of things Smit,

1. If you do option three, you would be at Calcite Mine by 10:45 at the latest, probably 10:30. Wouldn't be good for lunch.

2. If you camp at Truckhaven I don't think you need a metal fire ring. If Stan can work it Sputnik! is the bomb for warmth and a nice long lasting fire. Scott does have a point that it can get pretty windy in Truckhaven. With the wind lately might be iffy. You can run out and camp in most of the washes in Truckhaven on a non Tierra Del Sol weekend and have pretty good solitude.

Brent has sputnik,(fire tub=campfire!) maybe he would trust someone to pick it up and return it.

As much as I love sputnik, I would not want to be responsible for it! Plus I have no room on my Non-Inti roof rack;) .

As for Mo's advice, I was kinda worried about that.

Option 5. I wonder if we could get Lower Coyote in 1st, Calcite Mine Second (and for lunch/hiking/etc.) and then head over to Truckhaven and start the trail and camp wherever we feel like it. What do you experts think of that? Is it too much for one day?

Option 6. I guess another option is to run Truckhaven first (have lunch somewhere along it) and then head over to Lower Coyote after that to seek wind shelter for camp. Then hit Calcite mine on Sunday Morning.

I think that I like option 6 the best (although the non-campers might not:crybaby: , though they are still getting 2 trails in on Sat.)

the distances are not that big on the N side. Only about 20 mins btwn BS or beginning of Coyote Canyon and Truckhaven or Calcite Rd.

Landcrusher'70, here are some ideas for pot luck: I usually like to do something pretty simple. Meat, refried beans and tortillas. I know alot of people like more than that. I will be bringing a little over four pounds of meat, not enough for the main dish for everyone. You could also bring some carne or pollo asada or refried beans or spanish rice that you make at home the night before and warm up later or condiments such as guacamole, sour cream, cheese, salsa, chopped onions, cilantro or tomatos as well as giant flour tortillas or you could stick with your original thought and bring s'mores ingredients. Last but not least:beer:    :D

I'm really not much for Sun breakfast but here are some of my favorites: Bacon, sausage, eggs, frozen o'brian potatos (the ones w/ onions and peppers)

The weather is looking good. Whatever we work out I'm sure we'll have a good time. I'll bring some wood. FYI If you take the 78, you can find nicely split eucalyptus for $15 a wheel barrow at the fruit stand lot on the corner of the 78 and San Pasqual Rd. I plan on grilling some vegetables for the pot luck and some hot Italian sausage for appetizers.
and drinking some good...

Smit - do you still have a factory roof rack up there? I don't recall. If you do, I've got a nice little rack box I built for sputnik and gas cans that is then secured directly to the cross bars of the factory rack.

It's maiden voyage was Death Valley last year. It survived that trip, so I'm sure it would survive this. Only issue is time for you to come get it. I'm out of SoCal at noon Friday to take my daughter back to college.

I'm more than happy to let you guys use it if someone can transport it.

Shoot me a pm and we can make arrangements.

Here is some (abbreviated) info on the runs from the: Guide to Southern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails.

Coyote Canyon - Moderate: About 9.5 miles one way to campground. Allow 3-4 hrs. for round trip plus additional time to explore other legal roads. It may take us longer to do this run with multiple vehicles.

Calcite Mine Road - Difficult: an hour to reach the mine. Only 1.9 miles. Side canyons to explore in Palm Wash. I believe it took us less than an hour to get up there in Dec.

Truckhaven - Difficult: 11.8 miles. I (the author) drove this in about three hours with help from an expert guide. Plan to spend the day in the area. IIRC, this is the loop the TDS group does. This route is not the only one out there, but the only one outlined in the book.

More notes on Truckhaven: The area is a maze of deeply cut trenches and sharp ridges. Extremely narrow with tight turns, near vertical climbs and cliff like descents. Articulation is severely tested for the average hardcore vehicle. Lockers are necessary, preferably front and rear. Vehicle damage is possible. This loop may not be the best for this trip. If we go to Truckhaven, I believe we should just plan on exploring the area; driving up washes and such. You really can't get lost out there.

For reference, it took us a day (I believe we started around 10-10:30am) to run West on Palm Wash, playing around a bit and doing some light hiking. Then up Calcite Mine Rd and back to S22. Finished up the day by doing Rockhouse Canyon and getting back to S22 just after nightfall. Rockhouse Canyon is long and slow the last half of the trail. It probably took us at least 2.5 hours for that run.

Hope this helps.

Great info, thanks for taking the time to post it.

UPDATE

I am looking foward to going, I think I will only be able to do a saturday trip though.

I will still try to contribute with some fire wood and snack type foods for saturday evening.

I will probably be solo so if anybody is heading to the meeting point from pomona/san gabriel valley area can I follow?

Smit, if you want to throw your factory rails on and take Sputnik as Brent offered we can have Sputnik staged at my house if there is a time conflict with Brent's schedule.

If we're trying to find the consensus, my vote is for the most difficult trails. That being said, I don't want to scare anyone off. I want everyone to feel comfortable and have fun. It's just that I haven't had a real opportunity to challenge my rig:D

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Woo Hoo I'm a "regular" now!

What can I say, I have to celebrate the little things in life:cool:

Absolutely have to find joy in the little things, one might go crazy otherwise.

I celebrated when I became an addict but proclaiming "My name is Mo, and I am a MUDaholic." :D

Brent and Mo:

Thanks for the generous offers to get Sputnik out with us. I actually broke my rails while taking them off (don't ask), so I will be unable to take Sput. Wish I could though as it is the coolest thing ever!

Looks like we may have to camp at lower coyote in order to have the required fire.
