Can anyone volunteer to put together an agenda for at least Sat.? I really am clueless about the area (with the exception of lower Coyote and Sheep's Canyon). I figure we could run something in the am and then head over to lower coyote in the pm to run it and set up camp for those who are camping. I would like to run some more on Sun./ morning but we can even decide on that around the campfire on Sat. night.

I can try to throw something together. I haven't run the drop off's in a very long time but I have good maps and trail books so shouldn't be too hard. I am thinking a loop starting off S22 then down south and run the drop offs and canyon stuff and loop back to S2 and west into town at which point those who are camping can take off to Lower Coyote in the mid afternoon or so. Sound any good? Anyone who knows it better and has any suggestions please speak up. :grinpimp:

^ Sounds good to me. :hillbilly:

the dropoffs on the "diablo" wash have to be taken from the road way south (overland stage route?). It's an hour to get to the beginning of the Vallecito wash from BS. Doing Vallecito, Diablo, then Sandstone and Fish Creek to get back, you're talking about most of a day. The Pinyon dropoff is closer I think.

Much appreciated Eric, I will do my best not to get the others lost. :D

I used the Backcountry Adventures book. Very nice. Good descriptions, ratings, time, and GPS coords. Highly recommended.

(and of course the terrific free USAPhotoMaps topo and aerials soft)

If you do diablo, when you get to Sandstone, be sure to go West past the "avalanche" blockage. It's wonderful further down.

So I got up nice and early yesterday and went to take out the Cruiser and have a little fun....

in Borrego Springs!  :o :crybaby:  I called smitty at abut 9:15 to see where in the :censor: he was. As soon as he said Redondo it hit me.

I had a weekend trip planned with some friends for yesterday and it got cancelled. So I have been planning to go with everyone to Borrego instead. Apparently I need a crash course in calander reading.

I decide to do some solo wheeling with my 4 legged co-pilot. I drove down to S2 and headed out Vallecito Creek Rd and stopped at Hollywood and Vine for an obligatory picture (of the sign not me, Tillie wouldn't take the picture for me) then started up Arroy Seco Del Diablo. Stopped just before the drop off for a tasty and hot Manifold Burrito (tasty). When I got to the drop off there was a Heep and a Geo trying to make it up with no luck. I drove down and turned around and asked if they would mind if I went up. I then walked up it with no fanfare and turned around and came back down. I told them to quit playing around and get to the top. They were floored. :grinpimp:

I went up and down a few times and they hit some of the small but steep and rutted climbs at the bottom and made them all. I love having one of the most capable vehicles in the world. :bounce: :bounce2: Finished up Fish Creek Wash and headed home to make dinner with the :princess: and :crybaby: .

I can't make it next week as I have family obligations I must do. Have fun do us all proud.

Oh yeah, let the barrage of insults and ROTFLMAO's begin.

I have Southern California Backroads and 4wheel drive trails, with the very good descriptions, ratings, time and GPS as well. Could we be talking about the same book?

I didn't get your post till I got back so I will have to hit Sandstone Canyon next time.

I only two other cruisers, one 40 and one 60. Would have been great to have the group out there and really blow everyone's mind. Oh, well. Next time.

no, different book.

you did better on the first dropoff than I did, then. I didn't make it all the way back up in a couple of tries. Of course, I was pretty heavy and I had the tires at 32 psi or so, but I didn't feel like airing down just for that. I'm pretty sure I could have made it up with lower pressure or at least I like to think so. What pressure were you running and what tires? I had the MT/Rs on.

Interested in checking out your book. I will have to look into that.

I had 315 BFG A/T's at 18 PSI. I have the air and could go at my own pace all day so I figured what the hell might as well have a nice ride.

when I looked into it, I thought this book was the best of the bunch, exclusing the hardcore stuff.

Yes, ATs and 18 psi would make a difference. I made it within 20 ft of the end of the sand, that would likely be enough of an improvement to make it up there. Of course, you may also be a much better driver than I am... :)

Well now that were getting a little closer, is everyone other than Slomo still in?
Do we know where we'll be camping Sat. night?

Do we have the fire pit/container wood situation under contol?

Do we have a wheeling itinerary?

Does everone have an idea of what to bring to the pot luck or need suggestions?

Does anyone have a 60" HiLift? I'm still waiting for mine to show up:mad:
I'm pretty well set up in the camping department and can bring more than my share.

I will bring the ipod boom box and music (anyone with an ipod should bring theirs as well)(after you hear some of my music you may want to lynch me:eek: )

I'm still in.

I understand fire rings are not required outside us Anza Berrego.

I just picked up a 60" high lift jack and bolted it to the roof rack w/ U-bolts for now.

I was thinking about makin a Lazy Cobbler w/ a dutch oven for pot luck.

I know that I am still in. Camping Sat. for sure. Going to try and get out there Fri. evening too.

Since no one seems to know anything about the area (that's going at least), I bought a trail book today and will prob. start another thread for all of us going to vote for trails to run.

The plan is to still camp Sat. night at Sheep's Canyon (on top of the Lower Coyote Trail). This is a easy trail to get up and as long as we head up there by 2pm, I think that should give us enough time to get up it and set up camp before it gets dark.

As far as what to do from 9:30am - 2pm, well that is where the poll will come into play.

I am good for some side and appetizer dishes for Sat. night and also sausage for breakfast in the morning.

I would like to run another trail before heading back to LA on Sunday (we can always talk about that over campfire on Sat. night).

I think that if everyone who is camping on Sat. would bring a bundle of wood then we should be good on wood.

I have a small high lift.

My $.02

I MIGHT be able to pull it off, but i will be last minute for sure! If i can make it, i will be at the meeting spot on Sat AM and camp wherever everyone else is

Do we know where we'll be camping Sat. night? Sheep's Canyon

Do we have the fire pit/container wood situation under contol? No ground fires within the park. Sheep's Canyon falls in that category. We'll need container for a fire. Anyone have one? I'll pick up a bundle or two of wood at the store.

Do we have a wheeling itinerary? Not yet, but some of us have books. I would suggest NOT driving an hour to get to runs (i.e.: Diablo Dropoff). There are so many areas to explore close to where we will be. No need to drive so far.

Does everone have an idea of what to bring to the pot luck or need suggestions? I was gonna bring dessert, but it looks like it might be taken care of. Suggestions please . . .

Owl and I are meeting Friday afternoon and driving in. We'll most likely camp in Truckhaven. Wish I could pinpoint a spot, but it's a big area. We'll try to camp along the 'main' entrance to Truckhaven (N. Marina Dr. from the 86). If anyone needs more specific details to get there, let me know. If you can check Google maps, you'll see camps setup in the area (Hybrid map).

FWIW the run down to S2 and up Diablo to the 78 took till about 2. If you have extra time there are many different washes to explore and can be added if time works out while on Diablo. The drop off is fun and a good spot to play around and test your climbing skills.

When I was in Sheep's Canyon few weeks ago there was a metal fire ring there, so hopfully that will still be there (it looked permanant to me). If we don't want to drive down where Mo did and work our way back up, I have a few other options:

1. Leave the meeting spot at 9:30am and head over to The Slot. Climb to the top. Park/hike/lunch/etc. Head back down. Head over to Lower Coyote. Climb to the top. Those who are camping stay and set up camp. Those who are not will still have enough daylight to get back down and head home. Campers decide Sat. night if/what to run on Sunday.

2. Leave the meeting spot at 9:30am and head over to Calcite Mine.

3. Leave the meeting spot at 9:30am and head over to Calcite Mine. Climb to the top. Park/hike/lunch/etc. Head half way down and take Palm Wash over to Truckhaven. Run as much as we can leaving time for those camping to set up camp and those leaving to either turn around or finish Truckhaven to get back to 86. Campers will finish the trail Sun. morning before heading home (maybe even do Lower Coyote on Sunday too:idea:

What do you guys think. I also prefer not to drive an hour after we meet up (but will be more than happy to if majority wants to head down to Diablo, etc.

If these all blow, sorry I am new at this. If they are good, it is beginners luck.

I like option 3, w/ a twist.

We could run Coyote first thing Saturday morning, since it's the closest to the meeting point. Then run Calcite and Truckhaven.

Truckhaven is also a good place for a 'base camp'. You can really explore the area as long as you want. Just pick a direction and go. There is however, a Truckhaven run that loops from the 86. Supposed to be on the "Difficult" scale, but I've done runs tagged as difficult (same book) and didn't think much of it. In fact, I think Calcite was marked "Difficult". Possibly do this one Sunday morning?

I'm up for whatever anyone wants to do though.

Who (going) has the most experience out there? I've only been out a couple of times.

Oh I've got some of those shake and pour Pancake bottles I could bring for Sunday am. No griddle though.
