So who is Robbie and how much is his 4.6L rebuild? Very interested in having my motor rebuilt

I got one :) since I am looking at getting more power.

Robbie is probably the most famous engine rebuilder known on this forum, with years of experience.

And you would contact him how?

I already have his rebuilt engine in my truck.
I have no idea what those engines go for on the second hand market.
My idea was to sell my engine and use the money as a downpayment for a V8 conversion.

I am pretty sure this is not going to happen due to being castrated by a ring on my left 4th finger.

Don't ask, don't tell.

So if the turbo was a decent brand, what's the issue with CX racing?

I know this is a little off topic, and I don't mean to derail the cam discussion. Having gone down the turbo rabbit hole, here are my thoughts on the CX Racing kit.

The bad:
-The turbo is a off-brand chinese turbo, so take that for whatever it's worth. If considering the kit, get it sans turbo since these types of turbos do not tend to last more than a 10-20k if the honda/mitsubishi/surbaru/whatever forums are any reference
-Has a divorced external wastegate that dumps to atmosphere. This means raw exhaust under your truck. It will be loud and it will smell terrible, not to mention the baby polar bears. Not an option anywhere with inspection/smog.
-intercooler placement is not ideal for a truck that will see off-road time

The meh:
-Their manifold looks decent. After working with a treadstone manifold (stout as hell, but poorly designed), I would be willing to give the CX manifold a shot. Might crack over time, but maybe not *shrugs*
-Although intercooler placement is not great, their intercooler kit could be a good starting point to cobble together something that doesn't hang so low. I am currently planning out a new front mount intercooler setup, and the LC is just not very well laid out for FMIC, so I understand why they did it the way they did. Other options include chopping up the radiator support, drilling pass-through in your frame rail, etc, etc.

Right, the second option helps with clearance, but places the inercooler out in front of the frame rails where it will be the first thing damaged in any sort of collision, also places the intercooler in a more horizontal position, majorly reducing the airflow through it.

This is what they offer. 2 different mounting options.

I actually wheeled gold mountain in big bear with CX racing's owner in his 80 with the prototype. Yup he has an 80 and he drives it quite often.

We all thought that it will get hit wheeling but it didn't, granted gold mountain isn't the hardest of tails but it has its share of rocks. Air flow will be restricted but there isn't another place to put a such substantial intercooler. Just mount an electric fan and problem solved.

Personally at 5 PSI I rather not have the intercooler at all.

He is a really cool guy. I dealt with him personally.

I would rock that i/c in that location under the frame.

I don't see how that intercooler gets any air flow mounted under the bumper horizontally without any ducting. At that point you just have a heat sink.

Totally agree, need an electric fan.

Think how much boost you get out of the system. You can run without the i/c.
There will be heat exchange anyway, there is airflow in that location too... not as much as the front, but there is some.

I can't say it is the optimal solution, but can't knock the idea either.

(I'm in California, so my opinion does not matter anyway)

Looks like I will probably be going with Schneider at this point when the machine shop gets started with the head. Looking forward to trying this.

I'm interested how this works out, I have been considering have cams made for mine, engine is fairly new so a cam change would be justifiable.

Only information I have is don't let the monkeys at UPS handle it.

I have been the test subject many many times. I think it's time for some of you guys to step up!! ;)

Ouch Scott. Did you ever get replacements on these? Btw, which grind did you go with? I'm planning on "while I'm in there'ing" some cams into my SC install. I've got no experience with Schneider or Kelford. I'll step up and be a test subject, haha. Just have to make my best educated guess, as it seems crazy no one on mud has cammed their 80's.

Had the cams done this week. Picked out their 248F grind for a little more power to wake up the motor. Kevin was great to work with through the process. They were quick and kept me updated during the process. They’re happy to answer all of your questions and like car talk. They packed the cams nicely and included some of their came break in assembly line. I was very pleased with it all.
