Anyone Considering a Cummins R2.8 w/ HF55 Swap?

You'll end up wasting too much money on the 3RZ and modding it to the point where it wouldn't be reliable. I own a 3RZ Toyota, and love (and praise) the little engine, but I don't think it'd do very well in an 80.

Supercharging the 1FZ doesn't really do much (we also have a TRD SC'd 80), and gas is an issue. I've always wondered why there arent any 2UZ swapped 80s in the states? (fuel efficiency no object)

I'd love a diesel LC, for no other reason than it'd be plain cool, but I'm too much of a purist to swap anything other than a Toyota engine. So, If it were up to me, I'd slap a turbo 1HZ engine and be done with it. Although it'd probably still be slow, but I don't care, there's no such thing as a fast cruiser lol

Think I remember reading that the main issue on this swap is the security around the ECU/ECM/PCM being able to hack the system to allow it to function properly in any vehicle. I know that at one point Jason (@reevesci) was working on something with the 2UZ and there are a few guys out there that have done them but I am assuming it probably takes some very specialized hacks to get it functioning properly. Hence more $$$$$ on the swap when you can reasonably get a 5.3 Vortec in for $10-$20k.

No way would mileage be anywhere near 20. I have a 2003 regular cab Taco with the 3RZ manual trans and the best I've ever done is 22 MPG. Week in week out it's 19-20. Add a supercharger and another 1500 lbs and you'd be right in the LC MPG range where you started.
I agree. I've got an 2004 and I've got 24mpg in it. Add power and weight and it will drop.

Yeah our 2011 4Runner gets pretty s***ty mileage. Really think that the EPA needs to re-evaluate their measuring standards because the sticker says 18-22mpg and we AVERAGE 17.3mpg with a mixture of city/hwy. Even with an entire tank on the highway, keeping it around 70-75mph we are lucky if we get 18mpg. Best every was 21mpg and that was going mostly downhill (8k' to sea level) keeping it between 65-70mph the entire way over about 300miles.

The EPA needs to re-evaluate a lot of things imo!

We just finished our first conversion into an fj62. We templated everything so we have a complete conversion kit for any 60 series with a manual trans. We installed it with an h55f and so far this thing is amazing to drive. Not only quiet but powerful, and fuel mileage will be reported when I actually run out of my first tank ;-)

Drool.

Would love one of those 2.8s. I love my 4BT to pieces, but the 2.8 should appeal to a much, much wider audience.

The 4BT is a great engine, but IMHO not a great fit for a cruiser. We've done a 4HK and it was OK, but still really unrefined. I think Cummins is coming to the market with a great solution for the cruiser, especially when the pricing will equal the LS EROD engines.

Nice going. I want!

Is there video or a build thread on this project? I'd love to see one in a 40

I just saw this thread. I have a FJ60 with a completed R2.8 conversion. It's awesome in every aspect. Smooth and quiet. My setup is a 1987 FJ60, H55f, 35" BFG KM2s, 4.56 gears. I'll be switching my gears out to 4.11. I can easily cruise 75+ mph. Tons of torque and currently getting 20+ mpg. There's a lot of 2.8 naysayers out there but fortunately, I can't hear them over the sweet whistle of my turbo.

Who did the conversion? Are you riding on an 80 chassis or stock with a lift?

I wanna see pictures/ videos and hear this running too

Overland Cruisers in Bozeman, MT did the conversion. No need for a 80 chassis. It's on the original 60 frame and suspension. Suspension is sprung over. You can see pictures/video at Torva Expedition & Offroad (@torvaoverland) • Instagram photos and videos and Overland Cruisers LLC (@overlandcruisersmt) • Instagram photos and videos. I'll try to post images and videos when I get home but it'll probably be a couple of days.

I'll post better pics later. I don't have access to my files right now.

Looks and sounds fantastic. More importantly I had no idea there was a specialty cruiser shop in Montana. I can now add it in to the list of places for the "where can or cannot we move to next with :princess:"
