Awesome project!

PM me what you're looking to spend I might be able to find what you need.

I'm glad to see someone going with the FJ60 case, as that is the direction I want to go. I am interested to see how the drive lines come out compared to the stock transfer case.

I'm curious about the transmission that you selected for this project. How are the ratios or the step up from one gear to the next? As you know, our AT has a stupid jump from 2nd to 3rd gear and it'd be nice to have a smaller jump.

Thanks.

GM 4L60-E transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gear ratios:

1 2 3 4 R
3.06 1.63 1.00 0.70 2.29

The second to third is pretty good, the big difference is the 1st to 2nd, that one is huge.

The newer GM 6 speed auto has some very nice ratios/splits.

(2.97, 2.23, 1.57, 1.18, 1.00, 0.75)

Fyi, Marks Adapters will have the 6l80 stuff ready in Sept. I thought about doing a 2wd conversion with a 6l80 then later put in the tcase, but the engine/tranny was out of my budget.

Very cool. I look forward to seeing the progress. Best of luck!

I'm still torn on trans preference.

I currently am leaning towards a 700R4 built and keep the trans out of the computer loop.....

The absolute beauty of this series of motors is you can use any GM trans made since '55.

4X2 or 4X4 and directly to the HF2A . ?

Not sure, but I would imagine 4x2. Here is the full post from 6/8:

Hi Jeff,

We are currently doing an adapter for the 6l80e to cruiser transfer and should have it finished in a couple of months. The 4l80e is a different adapter. We will have the Kits available for release at the Melbourne Australia 4wd show.

Hope this helps and if you still have an interest keep in contact or check out our website for the release in september or before.

Regards,

Sandy

nice post. keep it updated. i am also in texas. i have ls1 .thinking of doing that or doing diesel swap for my 97.

Welcome to mud!!! Where in Texas are ya at? The only difference between an LS1 swap and a diesel swap is $$$.

Hey Butch, what's up?!? I love the 700R4 in my 40. I ran it on the street a lot before the extreme bug hit me. You can tune this tranny with the computer though.

DFW area, i just recently pick this up. i think i got a great deal.
im new to 4x4 stuff. but this will be my chance to learn. i ve had a 4x4 4runner 94 but i never drive it so now going to sell it since i have the LC.
i will look for mostly tranfer cases. i see that the rer axle is centered but most tcases i see with th400 or others seem to have the shafts biased to passenger side.

DFW area,

Great! If you're over in the Rockwall, or I30 side of Dallas, you should stop by the shop. Also, it turns out one of the shops I work for is door to door neighbor to Cool Cruisers, looks like a forum advertiser. That place is big. They specialize in older FJ's.

Ohhh, I think I'm going to start looking for wrecked SS Camaros (L99, the auto version of the 6.2 LS3 that has DOD and VVT backed up with the 6L80E).

For what it's worth, I would not run a 4L60E. I have that same exact tranny behind an LQ9 in my 80, and getting the thing to work right was a bitch!

One thing you really need to figure out is if the tranny is pulse-width modulated, or not. Mine was an earlier model and it was not modulate - which basically means the torque converter lockup function is either on or off. If I am no mistaken, the modulation models ease the lockup on and off, rather than just a sudden on/off function.

The non-PWM transmission do NOT do a good job of talking to the LS series motors and require custom wiring/programming.

The only way I think to make it work is if everything you buy comes out of the same vehicle, including the motor, tranny, wiring and computer.

Best of luck!

Thank you for the post. The requirement that the drive train has to have 50k or less is going to keep me with the newer stuff. I'm telling the salvage yards everything has to come out of the same vehicle and it needs to come out of a truck. So that has narrowed down the field, but that's ok for me.

If it is newer and it comes from the same truck, you should be golden! I have had really good luck with LKQ for these motors.

Also, just an FYI --> the LQ9 motors sell for close to the same price, and offer quite a bit more power...if I remember correctly. However, either way you go, you should be good.

One thing you will have to deal with is the oil pan. I had to upgrade to a Kevco for front diff. clearance. Other than that, dealing with the fuel system and other odds and ends, you should be good.
