Another stealth tire carrier....

looks really good. How sturdy does the latch feel in that position? I have a similar latch and have been trying to figure out exactly how it would work best. definitely subscribed.

Really looks terrific. Love the stealth. If I have read the thread correctly - you are able to remove the tire carrier and only have the small post on the passenger side rear?

yeah, If I wanted to, I could drive around with the spindle sticking out, I actually thought about getting a spare outer part to make a cover for it so i could do my errands without opening a swingaway..., but then I thought 'why drive around town with no spare?'... besides, getting it on and off is a pain. we try to take jackattack up the mountian every week.

the ability of the latch to keep it closed seems plenty adequate. I did notice later that there is a like latch that has a secondary latch. this one just stays closed on a cam over principle. Ill likely upgrade at some point. its not done though, since without a fixed stop, its really fiddly to close, and the tire could hit the lift gate. I will be removing the current 'foot', enlarging it, and incorporating a stop plate, but not till next weekend.

when open, I can hang my 225 lb self on the end and the outrigger flexes a degree or 2. I have an improvement outlined for the top bolt arrangement that will help. I have a mount plate coming as well as some prefabbed gussets for the upright.

spindle and latch $120
6 feet 2x3x1/8 $30
wheel plate coming $15
gussets $12
misc hardware $20
scap angle iron and plate

miller 211, priceless.

Found a few minutes before work to swap out the too small foot and add a stop plate. Much easier to open and close now.

Still waiting on brown santa with my mounting plate and gussets.

I just cut a hole and welded in a receiver. Not in the picture is a crossbar on the top that I added later. I still need to add safety chain attachment points, and I'm going to trim it and add a vertical hole so I can store a drop hitch sideways underneath.

I definitely wish I'd done this and the latch at the same time. I saw another reciever done with a sort of backing plate around the opening that was bent out at 45's with holes in the bend for the chains. my latch could have been on that plate too. oh well.

Northern Tool is pretty damn awesome, I dont spend nearly enough time on that site looking at all the good stuff they got.

I used a slam latch off a nissan pathfinder, it works pretty well and I just push the swingout and don't worry about it coming apart, though I did notch the aluminum step plate and weld the catch to the crossmember, I also removed the step plate and reinstalled it with two hole pipe straps around the bar so that it is hinged, now I can lift up the step plate to put it the hitch pin without having to climb under the truck to do it.

got a link to pictures of that setup? I just happen to have a pathfinder rotting in the back of my shop, been trying to figure out for a while how to steal the tire carrier off of it, but decided it probably wouldn't hold the weight anyways. but I do like the idea of using the latch

So my wheel plate showed up, and I slapped it on. I have a few more welds to do, but its mall crawling ready...

the tire hits the body in a manner that doesnt scare me... tho I imagine I will find a limiting strap sooner than later.

I was a little disappointed that the mounting plate custom made for my wheel pattern, will not accept the studs. unless the studs I got from auto zone are not the correct ones for a toyota landcruiser. The toyota lug nuts screw onto them though, so imagine they are the right part. I'll need to investigate a bit before i enlarge the holes. Which is OK, because I don't have (or know) the right size bit.

Very Cool!

Love your stealth set up!!! Your last post on this was July'14. Can we get a three month update. Any thoughts? Any changes you would make? Any additions coming, such as gas/water carrier on the other side? Just curious and really like your setup!
