I have 3000 miles on it, about 1000 of that on washboard roads, 100 on jeep trails. All seems fine. sooner or later I will take the cover off and take a close look at all my welds, everything looks good with a flashlight. I wont ever add a second swingout. the tail is in my mind the only place to keep the spare, but honestly, swingouts are a pain in the ass when I run errands, and id hate to have two.(i know, its a bit lazy, but there it is. besides, i didnt latch it correctly once already and had to pop a dent on the rear quarter. grr.(and I still dont have a limit strap made)

Thank you Lightfighter for the update! While I hear you on the "swing out-pain," I want my space back inside the vehicle and your solution looks great!

As a side note, I ended up with a baja rack for the roof. This weekend, I decided to give roof mounted a shot. So far, I'm not seeing any huge problems, tho I obviously haven't needed the tire. I'm torn now.

Nice work! You could add a gas strut for just a few bucks. You'd still want a positive stop though, the gas struts don't like being used as limit straps.

Has anyone used the gas strut from the rear door of an FJ Cruiser? It is used as a limiter for opening... It also locks position as a positive stop...
