So, I've tack welded my tire carrier outrigger together, now I need to decide whether to weld it on, or make it a bolt on.

So I put it all back together, its just tack welded enough to drive around.

I need to work out a few more things:

1. Bolt-on or just weld it. the lazy me wants to just weld it on. But if I need to tweek or totally change the design.... shrug.

2. material size for the arm. Seems like alot of these things are over built and really alot heavier than they need to be. Im probably gonna do the same thing though, for lack of an engineering degree. leaning towards 2x2x1/8.

3. The latch. I got one of those cam over latches. man is that un-sexy looking. I want a slam latch like a door mechanism.

Yeah, I think it will be worth the extra effort. I'll be able to do better welds without fighting access around the body and the exhuast anyway

From experience with other types of swing outs 2x2x1/8 is NOT overbuilding. That's marginal. I have a wheelchair lift that uses 2x2x1/4 and will deflect at full swing without the wheelchair on it. I'm not supposed to leave the 350lb chair on it to open but it deflects about 1" with the chair on it.

Subscribed bc I wanna do this soon.

Speaking from experience, I've built two of these - you want to reinforce in two planes. To the frame as you've tacked now, also towards the rear tire/fender well further up the frame. By the time you put your tire on and everything else, its a lot of weight and it will vibrate and move a lot. Cam over is best.

Bolt on because your first design will need tweaking in the future

This swing out will be limited to the spare. 80lbs actual weight.

I've seen plenty of 35 inch mt's flying on a foot long 1/8 inch tube. The question is "are the welds done right", and is the geometry there. I haven't welded really in 15 years!

I got the flanges for the bolting welded up this afternoon. A couple more gussets to put on, but I wanted to get the holes drilled before I add them.

2x3or 2x4 will be my choice for my next, probably 3/16. My first was 2x2 1/4 and was fine, second was 2x2 3/16 and was not as steady as I would have liked.

nice design!

this weekend's tinkering...

These pics mostly show it tacked up. The tire is not affixed yet. trying to come up with something with a little flair...

gotta do the latch still. maybe while the jackattack naps.

I need to cut this foot off, create an angle from the arm to the foot, and cap it. i like the function, but it looks very blocky.

Need a stop plate, and a landing pad. Plan is to replace the aluminum step with steel.

the top perch was tacked on to make sure the tire didnt fall on my head while I was fussing around with the clamp. I may just buy a wheel plate online. Its not so easy to make stud holes line up.

Plan also is to add 3 gussets, at the 90's. Not sure it needs them, but I like welding.
