Progress

Lately I've been dealing with my dislike of the shape of the side 'wings" and their lack of ability to blend with the factory flares. I tried one modification that made it better but I still wasn't happy.

The latest profile comes from slicing the inside in two different spots, bending, and re-welding it. This step seems to provide the best profile (IMO) that I can come up with. It looks alot more integrated and I capped off the ends for a more finished look; going one step further and adding a flat piece on top underneath the flare.

About ready to do some fill-in then slap a coat of paint on it. This bumper has been one hell of a project!

Here's yet another thread on building the 4x4Labs rear bumper. I am absolutely thrilled with mine! even though I am not 100% finished yet.

I plan to store the spare inside so no swingouts. I need to clean up the welds - as mentioned the flap wheel is awesome for this - and get the finishing tubes on, then paint. I also plan to drill another hole on each underside to use the 3rd bolt that the hitch used for even more strength.

The difference in clearance is simply astounding, and the bumper is incredibly stout. Can't say enough good things about it...........

Akarilo, Do you have any more pictures of the side wings after the bending? I think im going to go your route and and add a little angle tot he side wings. Looks to me like you grinded some material, bent and then welded a bead over the area you grinded for the bend?

It's coming down to Sean's bumper and this one for me. Having trouble deciding.

Mine kit should get here any day. I can' wait to have a new project for a while.

the whole bumper with tire mounted on it 281 lbs.
bumper only w/ spindles 139 lbs.
wheel and tire 89 lbs.
tire carrier 21 lbs.
both swingouts 31 lbs.

you still have to add a few lbs. for spindle bearing assemblies, bumper mounting hardware, and lug nuts.

That's DIY kit form like in this thread. If you call them they will send you a pricing list. I'm thinking the finished bumper is over $2000 if you want dual swing outs and powder coated. I think you can get close to $2500 with some extra options. I figured I just about paid for my welder by building it myself. But then i didn't really need a welder or another aftermarket bumper anyway as the one I had was fine!!

Holy Crap! Thats a lot of money to dish out on a bumper.

I think that is a fantastic looking bumper whether you go pre built, or the kit, but man thats a lot of money.

Hey Dave, not sure if you are still in the city or somewhere close but I would love to see how that bumper comes together or lend a second hand if you need it. I am planning one for the summer as I don't have a garage and could use the experience on putting it together. Let me know.

Can you post a few more pics of the side wings that you modified please? Looks really nice, would like to see a pic straight down the body side.
