managed to get some rattle can on to protect the spiffy housings. still working on cleaning them, then i'll get the 4.56s in (rear diff is already locked, on the front, i gotta swap my old arb in). trying to get the brake backing plates/cylinders etc cleaned up for the rear...one side is done...one to go.

unfortunately, also had to work on the 80, the ford, and the 40 and really should pay attention to the other pig....man i need a bigger plate;)

They look good. It's gonna be a shame to sand away the paint to weld all the crap back on them.

You need to sell avehicle and buy a good compressor, pressure pot and a blast cabinet. Will save you all kinds of time.

got a good compressor and blasting stuff, just not good ones, so i spend more time getting frustrated with the blasting stuff than using it. ih8harborfr8

just need to sell some vehicles so i don't have so many to work on. last weekend, all four of my running rigs were down:rolleyes: got the 80 and the powerchoke back up and running, 40s halfway there and blue pig is electrical which i both dread and am getting sick of, so who knows when i'll get around to that.

got a bit more done in the last couple of weekends. dressed up the junkyard rotors, got the knuckles grease free and rattle canned and rebuilt the calipers. everything was junkyard quality, so it all took a lot of work, including filing one of the pistons on one of the calipers

Cool!! Is that the one that has been on CL for a few weeks?

soooooo, i knew it had been a while (years) since i had broken the bellhousing bolt off in the block, but this thread shows just how long one bolt has kept this project at a complete standstill.

without the bolt removed, it was pointless to put in trans/xfer. without those, i can't set the rear axle. i also can't set the front axle, or bolt any accessories to the block. without the front axle set, i can't get the power steering done. see...on bolt put the entire thing on hold.:bang:

i had tried eezi outs, left hand drill bits, welding onto what was left until i had something to grab, finally i just welded up the hole and figured i'd drill it out.... weld material is harder than regular drill bits. order cobalt bit, then lose it in the few weeks before i get to work....aaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!:bang:

then pighead came along and spent and afternoon with the dremel and a couple stones. lo and behold, no more weld. but the hole was a bit egged out. thought i'd drill it larger and helicoil it, but, for grins stuck a bolt in to see how far i needed to go and found the broken section wasn't that deep...i still had plenty of threads farther down

by now, the bellhousing had been off for a long time, but i'd bolted the flywheel and clutch up so i didn't lose hardware....after six years of sitting in the pig in the elements, the friction disc had welded the flywheel and clutch together

see my hell? take the flywheel to work and turn it, order a new clutch. get everything bolted up. the last two days have been spent getting the tranny/xfer stabbed, go to grab one of the pig rear shafts so i can set pinion angle on the rear....it's too long?!!! wtf?!

a good 1/4" too long. measure the other one...it's longer. now i've got a sprung over pig, with a v8 mated to a stock 4speed....that puts the shifter up under the heater, so, between the forward xfer and the lift, i should be showing splines, not too long. measure the shaft in the blue pig...43" 3-4" shorter than the other two. hhhhmmmm, was the 62 shaft that i gave to a friend yesterday really a 62 shaft? going to have to check into that. then, thinking one of the shafts might be from a 3spd pig, which would be longer.

so, going to pull the shaft from the blue pig so i can at least set and weld the axle, research shaft lengths and figure out wth (on the positive side, it's much cheaper to shorten than to lengthen), and maybe get some crap bolted on the engine :bounce::bounce2:

only one pic for now as it appears my computer is very unhappy with me and on the verge of saying goodbye

got the rear pinion/axle set and welded this morning. just spring mounts. won't really weld anything else in until later.

nice view of the pigsty from the other night

Use the top plate and shifter from a FJ60 (bolts right on) to get your shifter away from the heater. It'll move the shifter back about 3,5 inches and no heater modifications necessary. Might even have one available by the end of the week...have to go back to the FJ40/55 top now that my Ranger overdrive is pushing things back about 7 inches.
FYI, I'm impatient after three weekends of redoing my drive train. Can't imagine three years!

with rain and cooler weather setting in, it was time to get the front bench out of the driveway, so i buttoned everything up again. dang i forgot how sexy a stock pig interior could be ;)
