OinkOinker, Do you have rear shoulder belts located on the rear seats? Mine are mounted on the rear pillar. I'll try to get some pics.

i have the center belt mounted on the seat (only a 2 point lap type belt) and the 2 outer belts in the rear are mounted up on the C pillar.

were the US spec rears mounted on the seat?? ooo diffrent.....

This is what I was after with the pic request...

Thanks!

Hey, would anyone recommend any certain type of brake parts? I am looking for shoes, probably cylinders, and springs. I am also in the market for some new tie rod ends. Are the Cruiser Outfitters quality? Because they have a sale.

Thanks
Andy

Well, this weekend, I replaced all my brake shoes. The front right and rear left wheels are locking up and the brake cylinders aren't getting any fluid. I ordered all new wheel cylinders, so hopefully that will solve my problem. I don't know if I need to replace the master or not. I have not had the truck on the road in three weeks, so I hope to get her ready to drive back to Chicago in a week. I also replaced the knuckles two weeks ago. Seems like all the work I do only makes it worse. I guess if it isn't broke, don't fix it?

haha, you'll get it dude...

Or you could switch to disk brakes...

Well, I got all new wheel cylinders, shoes, and springs on. It doesn't seem to have much brake pressure. It engages almost to the floor. What would this be? Master Cylinder adjustment or wheel cylinder adjustment?

I've had a hell of a time getting my brakes right too. I replaced the Master Cylinder and new shoes thru out but I didn't replace the wheel cylinders. If I adjust the pedal height correctly they seemed to work great but after a few miles would lock up. I have them adjusted now where I have to pump the pedal to get them to stop. Where did you get the Wheel Cylinders and Springs? Mucho Clams??

Chet-I got my cylinders at CCOT, mainly because I am out of time and they are close by. It wasn't too bad at all, about 250 total. I bought springs and shoes too. Total: 600 or so.

Gibran-Yes I have. I've adjusted them until the shoe was tight on the drum then backed off a few notches.

Hmmmm. Brake booster? When you pump the pedal, does pressure build up to a point where you can't pump any more...and remain like so if you keep your foot on the pedal? Or, does the pedal slowly go back to the floor?

The pressure does not build much at all. It is loose until a certain point (almost to the floor) then get's hard, no matter how many times I pump it. It does the same thing every time.

Mine are also adjusted right. I didn't replace the springs and I also didn't grease the backing plates like your supposed to. I'm hoping once that's all done they will release like they are supposed to. I don't notice any hissing from my booster and no issues with the motor when braking.

Andy- were your wheel cylinders leaking? Mine don't show any signs of leaking but I'm sure they haven't been replaced or rebuilt in a long time.

I was gonna guess brake booster. Mine is doing somthing similar, but not as bad. However I have the booster hiss going on, so I am pretty sure that's the ticket.

Howdy! If the engine idle speed changes by a couple hundred rpm every time you push down the brake pedal, then you have a major vacuum leak. If it is not just the hose from the manifold to the booster, then it is inside the booster. I had to rebuild mine about 15 years ago. The "banded" booster on my 72 FJ 40 was a lot easier to take apart than the "cam-lock" unit on my 76 Piggy. I found that if you apply about 25-30# of vacuum to the booster with an air conditioning service pump, it unlocks very easily. Put it back together the same way. Unfortunately, I have heard that all those rebuild kits are becoming Unobtainium. John

Pig Setbacks

Thanks everyone for the help. We set off last night from Longview, TX and made it to Dennison, TX and threw a rod. Dropped it off at a Toyota dealer for the night. Not sure what i'm going to do. I don't have enough money for a new motor. It's got alot of great parts on it, just needs a motor. New brakes and knuckles.

Chet- mine didn't leak, but were locked up ans wouldn't adjust. I assumed it was time for some new ones.

Well, the crank and a couple pistons are shot, but the block is intact. Would anyone on the forum be interested in this truck? It will be in Texas all summer. I love this truck, but I really need a reliable car.

I am trying to finish my other project right now too. Hopefully she'll be done by memorial day.
