x2 on the "brand new engine" description John :)

Back on the road in 10 days - ------ - Man! You'll be so excited you'll be lucky to sleep during those 10 days

As usual you are right but in addition to excitement I really want to get this phase of the project over with, the last mechanical mod. After this, the rest is cosmetic, i.e. paint and upholstery. Additionally the installation of this represents the most expensive mod that has been or will ever be done to this rig. I'd really like the financial bleeding to stop and I can get to just ride around town, the country etc, enjoy this rig and get back to saving some $ on a regular basis as in my pre-cruiser days.

how many splines in the tranny input shaft .?

As you can see it all came bolted together as it was in Japan so the tranny input shaft has never been out to see the light of day.

H150 21 splines ... H151 14 splines ..

David,
Thanks. Is there any other way to distinguish between the two without looking at the input shaft?

Hello John,

Yes, a Cruiser can easily become a money pit. But it is worth it. Patience.

I noticed the transfer shifts from H2 to N to L4. It looks like it worked with an H4 switch. Have this connection checked with your mechanic, you might need an FD/H4 switch on your dashboard, as well as associated wiring/piping.

If I remember correctly, once you activate the switch, an electrical/pneumatic mechanism shifts the transfer. However, I might be wrong. Anyway, make sure this is the case before proceeding.

the front DS it's activated in the HF1A t-case by a electric motor sitting in the upper right of the t-case ..

You guys are both right. After I got the engine uncrated I saw the motor sitting on the side of the t-case and asked my mechanic. He told me that we would have to install the switch. I am going to have it be a cruiser style pull switch and eventually get one of armaurer's custom pull switch knobs done.

The fun on the motor that activate the front SD it's it only run for a few segs ( 3 ? ) just enought to run the fork and engage the front DS ..

Guys here is an update. More problems to report. First, while I'm waiting for a slot to get into the gargage, my transmission now hardly shifts into 1st, or 2nd. I have drained the oil from the tranny twice and twice we get get chunks of metal. Given the imminenet transplant the plan is nurse the rig along until surgery. For the tranny, all we are doing now is refilling gear oil and shifting carefully. Second, the rad has sprung a couple of leaks. For the rad I have poured ample supplies of "Stop Leak" or magic dust as they call it here. It seems to be holding after day two. Adding it all together, drive shaft, tranny and now the rad, I guess the old girl can sense that the transplant is coming and is just giving up the ghost, a system at a time. As frustrating as it all is, all of this is cured once the new bits go in, i.e., new rad, new tranny and new driveshafts. For now I'm hobbling with her back and forth to work praying that she doesn't put me out on the side of the road again, remember this is my DD.

Hello John,

Yes, the old girl is giving up the ghost. But she's been a good ship so far, from what you tell us.

I am glad to hear you have the transmission complete with the electric motor. I was concerned you might not get it.

Regarding the switch, it is a pull button and I found a picture of a BJ40 example in the web. Hope it helps you to have a similar one fabricated.

Juan,
I just have to help her limp along for just a little bit more and then she gets to begin her surgery and next the make over. I'm just hoping that if I keep feeding her fresh gear oil and anti-freeze she won't faint on me before the transplant.

As to the pull switch, Thanks, very cool pic. I have seen those before but not in any color...that kind of gets me to thinking....:hhmm: On second thought I think that I'll try and keep all of the dash knobs the same material and color but it looks really interesting anyway.
Thanks again,
John

Hello John,

Good luck with the nursing... Patience, a few days and it will be over.

I am glad you liked the picture. A colored switch would look good, and a black one would as well.

Keep up the good work.

Ok yesterday I took the old girl in for surgery. Here are some shots of her now that the original B motor, transmission and t case are out.

Here is a shot of the damage left over when the bolts failed on the rear drive shaft a while back.

What's going to happen to the old 3B?

Just on the hunt for a few parts, is all.....

Dan

I understand it is a 2977cc B engine rather than a 3B Dan. And the style of the glowplug busbar (mostly in the vertical plane) supports this. Besides - Pretty sure I can see the "B" clearly cast into the side of the block too.

But it doesn't look like any B-engine I've seen in a BJ40 before.

In this part of the world I'd expect to have found that in a Dyna or Coaster rather than a BJ40.

The intake manifold is different to mine and it employs a rotary/distributor-style injector pump rather than an inline pump.

Other differences from my B-engine are: There is no EDIC system, the radiator cap is on the thermostat housing, the primer is on the fuel filter ....etc.

I think it is a later-model B-engine compared to my 1979 - Perhaps mid-eighties?

Cheers
Tom
