Locking ASCO hubs are giving me fits. I can't get them back together.

I can't get the dang snap ring back in (part #5). Tried the new seal, old seal, flipped the snap ring, swapped snap rings, added grease removed grease, lined the detent ball up at Free, Locked, and in between. Changed where the ends of the snap ring line up to be on the free or locked areas, and I've flipped it around so the ends are opposite the free and locked detents.

What's the secret?

There is about 0.5mm between having the clip fit into the groove. It works without the seals, but with, i cannot get the handle to seat far enough into the hub cover.

V V ...just thinking out loud here but two thoughts hit me. Is it possible to be 180 degrees off resulting in the uneveness you showed in the other post? or the other thought is, have you mixed parts from one set to the other. Everything is so close to working it almost looks like they could be lapped in.

I started out keeping all the sets together. But after not being able to get them to fit together I began trying pieces from the other set to see if it would work.

I don't think I'm 180° off - marks on the control handle line up with the housing. You can only go between the two detents in the housing. I've switched the clip 180° and flipped it both ways.

I definitely think that sandblasting it has made it difficult.

Sandblasting does make metal, especially aluminum grow. I mentioned lapping. It might be worth a try to put some valve grinding compound in the mating area and work it back and forth. It should smooth things out and allow it to seat deeper.

Fortunately I only blasted the outer surfaces. The clip was in while I blasted.

Clearly I must do some sanding/lapping. I'm concerned it won't rotate once the clip is in.

I'll try lapping the surfaces in.

Is this of any use VV?

I recently rebuilt a set of 62 hubs for my 40 with RCVs and ran into a similar issue. My dial was not fully seated in the hub cover. Grease it and apply constant pressure until you feel that last small movement. Try not to put too much focused pressure on the hub cover.

Nice hubs! Will those 62 Aisin hubs fit a '77 FJ40 with the longer birfs? I'd like to replace my Warn hubs with Aisin.

Fast Eddy is correct. I needed these hubs with RCV axles, birfs and hub gears. Installed an ARB as well. First event with this setup was amazing!

I have a 77 and bought a set of the long bodied Aisin hubs. I think Asco and Aisin made them for the 55s. Getting rare and hard to find.

Still need help here.

Working on this again. I put the parts in a vice to get the clip seated.

I was easily able to get the clip in. However, the handle will not turn - it binds and even with the back end of a set of pliers I cannot move it.

I don't get it. I feel like I'm using the wrong clips, but these are the 1 mm clips I removed. I've even put those on the wire wheel, and sanding wheel, and 360 grit sandpaper to smooth and reduce the thickness a bit.

The inner grooves of the housing are clean minus a tiny bit of grease.

Inside lip of the handle is very clean.

I have lapped these parts in "to some degree" (not for hours). Clearly I must continue this.

Man, this is frustrating.

Advice besides - keep on lappin'?

Does it seat and turn easily without the gasket/seal? Did you mix and match parts from multiple hubs? Is there more than one way to install the seal?

It does seat and turn without the gasket - but with new or old gasket, no dice.

No - I was initially careful to keep parts together from the set (the ONLY set I have), and not to cross left to right. Then I swapped L to R to try that.

Since original seal won't work either, and since I cannot get the new seal to stay in any other orientation, I figure that's not it.

are you assembling with everything dry but that groove for the snap ring OR are you lubing everything up so grease is in every friction point?

Do you have the seal oriented correctly. If I recall, there's a bit of a bevel to it. Here's a pic of when I did mine

If you have it flipped, it won't seat fully.
