ASCO Locking Hubs - trouble reassembling

AISIN/ASCO Hub O-Rings? If you sourced them from us they are OEM Toyota, we have never stocked anything but OEM Toyota hub o-rings which are an o-ring but not a round cross-section but rather a unique shape. Same as a new AISIN hub comes standard with.

Kurt,
Correct - the "seals" were from you. I ordered another set from Beno just to compare. The ones I got would not allow the handle to seat and get the c-clip back in place. But, neither would the original seals. See above for everything we tried.

I wan't aware they were OEM - just assumed they weren't. I don't recall them having OEM packaging, which is why I said that. My mistake.

ASCO hubs must be earlier than ASIAN hubs.. Maybe that's the key here..

Perhaps that "O-ring" underwent a design change and became thicker when the ASIAN brand-name replaced the ASCO brand-name or at some other time (assuming the hubs evolved as most components do).

I don't think Toyota allocated their own part numbers to these O-rings at any stage .. And if so, this would explain why we would be likely to miss such a design change.

But I'm puzzled here VV.

Tried again today ......With the OLD seals, which are slightly smaller, it WILL seat, but it WON'T turn without a great deal of force, and it WON'T go from Free to Locked - PERIOD. It binds up about 1/2 inch from the Locked position......

So I'm not understanding why it wouldn't turn freely even with the old original "O-rings" in place ....Surely they must have been the correct ones and surely the hubs must have turned freely before disassembly??.

The old seals were sloppy loose when reinstalling. I think they were pinching when assembling, or binding up when turning the dial.

This still makes no sense to me...it HAS to have been something to do with the sand blasting. or the hub faces somehow got warped slightly...not sure how that would happen though.

No worries, just wanted to reassure you that they 'should' be the correct ones. We use large amount of OE parts in our lineup, most are labeled as such but those particular o-rings come from Toyota in a 10-pack back so we re-bag them. Perplexing they won't fit... The ASCO to Aisin change may have some merit? I'll have to toy around with some in the shop. Weird.

I just lightly blasted the outer surfaces. I didn't blast the mating surfaces. Rainman looked at them to ensure I wasn't crazy. He could not find anything wrong either.

They are working great with the o-rings. I'll check the fit of what Beno sends me.

My thinking is perhaps somehow the seals are turning or moving when doing assembly , hence the fit issues . If a regular o-ring will hold up to a hard water blast (indirect with pressure washer or direct with garden hose nozzle) they should work and last fine .

Agree – the old seals must have been moving when turning and bunching after FORCING the parts back together (like in-the-shop-press forcing). I could - with additional mechanical assistance - turn the dials about 80%, but then they would bind.

New seals would not even allow me to seat the c-clip all the way around, and I certainly could not rotate the dial.
