A 1990 HZJ80 mini-refurb from Saudi Arabia

Perhaps it does rev at 4,000 at 130 km/h.. I've never gone that fast. lol!

Best test is to run at 100 km/h at GPS speed and report RPMs. That's the universal speed that we can tell if gearing is off.

@gnarlynick2072 RPM is dead on 3,000RPM at 100km/h GPS speed.

How does that compare?

How about fuel quality? Does that affect it?

Woah, ok so you definitely have a gearing issue somewhere.

Mine is 2450 RPM at 100 km/h. That's pretty much the standard with the H151 and 4.11s.

Fuel quality doesn't have anything to do with it, it's all gearing.

Think of it as a chain of gears. Everything is directly linked. The gearing will change through either the transmission, transfer case or the diffs. You confirmed that your diffs are 4.11s so your re gearing is somewhere either in the transfer case or transmission.

Hmmmm. Now I'm really intrigued. I followed this thread because of the beautiful refurb, but it's taken a turn relevant to my Japanese imported 80.

My 5-speed manual 1990 HDJ81 with the 1HD-T, manual hubs, and open diffs runs 3000rpm at 100km/hr with 275/70R16 BFG AT KO's and chews up 7km/L of diesel. At 3700rpm and 115km/hr, it eats only 11km/L. With no original paperwork from PO, where/how do I check T-case, transmission, and gear specs? I can do the tire and drive shaft calculations easy enough, and I don't mind poking around underneath.

in the photo above, is the rocker panel supported by the wheel, looks like it has put a dent. does not look proper.

You would have the h151 with the 1HD-T (not 1HZ?). Do you have the part time case?

That is really odd, I wonder why there aren't some yota wizards contributing to the mystery....

Well spotted. The dent was there from before, when I scrapped by a large rock attempting a water crossing. Check out post #50, where my buddy with the chest waders on is hooking up a tow strap. Thats the rock I hit. The wheel in the above pic was resting on the chassis rails. Not proper, but no one was injured and no damage was done to my 80:)

@gnarlynick2072 I'll do the driveshaft test again and see if its 4.11 or maybe a 4.53 gears. A slight extra turn can make the difference.

@TZ62 I was getting about 9km/L (20-21mpg) pre turbo install, in all kinds of driving, (city, hwy, off road). Post turbo it is now more 7-8km/L (19mpg)

Yes I have the part time case. I remember when I bought it the PO told me he removed the full-time case, though I don't remember why. the PO is a friend who builds safari and big game hunting trucks here. It was his personal rig for 3 years, and he swears by the 1HD-T over the 1HZ. He also buys a bunch of Land Cruisers and Land Rovers, chops them up, and puts them back together in different combinations to suit his clients' needs. So it's likely some kind of local Frankenstein mix.

Extremely long shot, but Land Rover has some t-cases with high ranges that aren't 1:1 I think - is there a chance that it isn't a Cruiser t-case?

I think this is a good idea, a simple error here could explain all the confusion over your gearing.

@boozewz my mileage is great when rambling at 30-50 km/hr on bush roads, or near top speed (120 in my case), but in between it drops off considerably. My turbo is original as far as I know.

@bryson I never considered it. I've never even thought to investigate if a Rover t-case would fit my 80 (or any Toyota for that matter).

Oh it'd fit, but it would certainly be a ridiculous PITA. I really, really doubt that is the case here though.

Any way to verify your engine RPM? You had some issues with the tach early on, might that be a more likely issue than a mystery gear problem? It would also explain the low EGTs. On a petrol 80 you can use a timing light--not sure if there is any way to check the accuracy of the tach on the 1hz.

My tach issue in the beginning was I didn't have a working tach because the FIP had been changed by the PO to one that does not have a tach pick up sensor. When we replaced it with a brand new FIP housing, we made sure to order it with the pick up sensor. We plugged it in and it worked. At idle it sits around 800rpm and when revving hard it won't go past 4100 rpm. So by my estimation, its functioning properly.

I really need to find another diesel 80 around here and see how she drives. Or even a 105.

It looks like it might rain.

The terrain reminds me of the high desert in Southern California.

A short update.

Put on nearly 40,000km on the KM2's, and as early as last Jan/Feb some dry rot started to appear, but I kept putting off getting them replaced. Finally, thought it would be about time to get some fresh rubber.

Decided to go the Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx route, after reading many reviews, and also wanting to try something different.

Got a set of 255/85/16, my favorite size.

Valves stems barely lasted 5000km as I had these new ones put on recently.

First impressions are the tire is already much quieter and smoother than the KM2's. I am very much liking them. They also seem to have a somewhat wider profile than the KM2's, but steering remains just as nimble.

Looking forward to taking her out to the desert soon now that the weather is getting cooler.
