Well we will be there that last weekend of July...Black Bear- late July-early Augustwaaa
We're getting ready next week to start a slow trek west from our home state of Pennsyltucky! It's guaranteed to be a trying time as I've got 3 kids under 4 along for the ride. We'll actually be having a birthday along the drive, so then we'll at least have a 4 year old with us, haha.
My LC is currently hanging out at my mechanic as he is trying to repair an A/C leak. I'm afraid this may be a bit of a deal breaker if we can't get a solution, but I'm crossing fingers until I hear more.
I've got a loaner fly rod for the trip, get ready for some woefully terrible casts from this guy, it should be entertaining. I had a fun intro session with a friend last week.
It's been mighty difficult to concentrate at work the past few days!
If the AC doesn't work at least the road noise from having all the windows down will drown out the crying from the 3 kids!
Hopefully they can sort you out in time, shoot me a text with your departure plans. I am leaving Saturday the 20th solo and driving out to meet the family in Denver on the 22nd.
Picturing this makes me happy for some reason.Put all of your hot sweaty kids in @fireball 's nice cool truck for the trip. Problem solved until he has to pick up his family.
This makes me want to do black bear even more although my wife would probably side with you. I'm signed up for it on Sunday. Hoping late July holds true on that sign. This makes me want to skip Black Bear and do Clear Lake or Alpine loop. Even if it opens right before I'm not sure I want to do Black Bear with that much water/mud/snow. Is there a process to trade trails with people? I'm excited!
I don't know exactly where Black bear holds snow, but it is probably near the summit and not down on the steps. IIRC the most technical sections are lower in elevation and would seem to get allot of sun. This makes me want to skip Black Bear and do Clear Lake or Alpine loop. Even if it opens right before I'm not sure I want to do Black Bear with that much water/mud/snow. Is there a process to trade trails with people? I'm excited!

Man that really sucks about Black Bear and Poughkeepsie especially for a guy coming all the way from south GA.Corkscrew, Hurricane, California, Engineer are all clear and passable as of yesterday. The amount of avalanche debris that the crews have removed is simply staggering. I don't have a clue how they've done it so quick. Attached are a few photos of a section of trail last year compared to the same section this year....the felled aspens are incredible to see and should put into perspective what these crews have been dealing with. Animas Forks is clear. Cinnamon is being cleared from American Basin to the top today and then cleared to Animas Forks over the weekend. Imogene is currently being cleared. Yankee Basin is already clear to the top (Governor Basin has not been touched). Ophir is clear all the way. Maggie, Minnie and Eureka Gulches are clear to the midway points and expected to be completely clear before HIH opening day. No reports on Super Secret yet.
Poughkeepsie, Black Bear and Porphyry are likely not to be clear until mid-August (unless a serious heat wave hits and melts everything quick....which causes other issues). Clear Lake is clear above the treeline to the last switchback (expected to clear "naturally" within a few days).
Stony Pass is clear, but closed at Pole Creek indefinitely (Jeep was washed away and they are still actively investigating and searching for the missing person). That means Kite Lake is not accessible at this time. Even if it does open by HIH there is one thing to absolutely keep in mind: the water in the crossing will get DEEPER and FASTER as the day progresses....what you cross in the morning (when snowmelt is light) will be decidedly different in the late afternoon (when snowmelt has picked up from the heat of the day). This can catch a LOT of people off-guard. They think, "hey, I crossed it early this morning and it was no big deal". Then, they cross it in the evening and get bogged and washed downstream.
