-Trails are opening by the day. We're confident all will be open for HIH. Portions of some trails will likely still be closed, but the trail maintenance crews are working 12+ hours a day. Getting the trails open and safe is super important to the local economy.
-There is TONS of snow still in the high country. If you've never seen 20+ feet of snow before, this could be a banner year. A lot of it will melt over the next few weeks now that our temps are up.
-It will be muddy in a lot of places, maybe very muddy. If we stop for photos or lunch, please stay on the trail. Driving on the tundra or off trail will leave big ruts in the soft ground.
-Please be super cautious when walking near any shelves along the road. (There really is no reason to get near the edge of any road, but if for whatever reason we're out of our vehicles, please be careful) The ground can give way pretty easily when it's loose. The snowmelt will have the ground really soft in most places but especially in the talus and loose gravel. Pay close attention to your dogs and talk with your kids please.
-There may be some re-routing to a few of the runs. You may hit a portion of a trail that you've already done two or three times over the week as we work around some trails or sections that are closed. This is really only for the stuff E of Hwy550. (Cali, Corkscrew, Engineer, Alpine, Gulches, Poughkeepsie) There are places near Animas where avalanches filled the valley with over 100 FEET of snow.
Don't forget to leave some room in your 100. At the very least you'll have some new shirts and swag to bring home, but you may also have a new fridge, or awning, or roof rack or something huge. The polar plunge stickers will be well-earned this year. Bring a towel. Brrr.
