i'm at 240k miles right now, and this is what my PHH looked like too...

the mechanic thought that maybe this wasn't even it's first HG (2nd i guess)... i'll definitely be taking pics of it to show on here... as i am curious...

as you can see... not ideal.... being replaced with the green stripe bypass...




I've got a great 40th that I love, with 173k on the clock.

I'm not at all a mechanic but I am slowly learning...
I was watching Fast & Loud the other night and they had a car they were going to flip that turned out to have a blown HG they didn't know about when they bought it. They took off the valve covers and the insides looked like hell. All sludgy rust and nastiness! It must have been leaking for some time and then sat. This worries me more than I already was. Though for the first time since I bought mine it's finally not loosing coolant!

What kind of rotors and pads are you going with? Any tips on pulling the front axle?
 
The front axle pull wasn't difficult. A good impact gun would be my only advice. That and your trusty BFH. My truck isn't rusty though, that helps a lot, I would hate to have the rust I see on some of the pics here. The ends of the shocks did break off when i tried to drive the nuts off.

Those are 'Stop-Tech' slotted sport rotors. I've used them on other vehicles in the past and had good results. They used to be called 'Power Slot', some guys I know run them in SOLO-II racing and also like them.

The pads are the highest end Raybestos Semi Metallics I could get. They are designed for maximum grab. I avoid ceramic like the plague, terrible stopping characteristics, designed for less dust and fade. I put a set on my S2000 and even compared to old, worn OEM pads they were absolute trash. They don't fade, but they don't have the grip either, I thought they would get better with break in, but they did not. If I am not happy with the raybestos pads, I'll try a set of EBC or Hawk.

I tried a panic stop simulation a couple of weeks ago, with the OEM hardware I was not able to get the front wheels to brake hard enough to lock, or for the ABS to engage. I've tried it a couple of different times and on dry pavement, there just isn't enough stopping power. If pads won't do it, I'll be looking into larger brakes if I can find anything, it doesn't appear anyone makes them. I'll do a new master cylinder before I start down the custom brake road though.

Am looking for braided brake lines to increase pressure at the caliper. Does anyone make those for the FZJ80?
 
Decided to rebuild the calipers myself. I know hardly anyone does that anymore, but I like fixing stuff. Be more than a parts jockey!

Required about 1 hour of work per caliper. Saved $50/each over rebuilds and I know for sure what's in there. The pistons and bores were in great shape, just put in new seals, boots and hardware along with cleaning and painting.
 
Very cool once again! How did you paint the calipers? Much prep work? Primer? Hi temp paint I assume.
 
I de-greased them well, masked the mounting tabs and pistons and applied VHT caliper paint sprayed on light coats. For trucks, it's important to use black paint for heavy braking. Race cars and street posers need red caliper paint to increase braking, grip and horsepower.

If you use red paint on a truck, you also have to hang those plastic testicles from the tow hitch.
 
I build differentials in my big vise. But one day, I would like to have a steel bench mount.
 
Any updates on your brake pads? Did you stick with them or go EBC?
 
I am happy enough with the pads. I don't have the stopping power I'd like, but I don't think it's the pads. The pedal is soft and somewhat mushy with not much power. I think the master cylinder is tired. I had hoped that fresh fluid and new lines would help but the brakes feel about the same as they did before. The pads don't fade or make a ton of dust, and very quiet. I definitely like the semi metallics.

I've got an odd sound coming from the right front wheel though, something kind of 'crunchy'. It started almost immediately after I started driving after the axle rebuild. I've checked a bunch of stuff, but I can feel it when rotating the wheel by hand, a crunchyness coming from something inside the knuckle. The only thing that is in there is the new Nitro birf so I'm concerned it was defective. I am going to have to pull it apart soon and find out what's going on. :hmm:
