'93 1fz-fe engine knock. Main bearings = toast = cracked crank

Something I learned too from putting in a big order with partsouq (about $1500 AUD) is that I hadn't accounted for import tax of about $380 😏
So I could have avoided that by making a couple of orders under $1000 and I wouldn't have had to pay anything extra.

Did you get a bill for the import tax? How did that work?
I think I might have the same issue with incoming parts!

I hit the same thing with a large order a couple of months back. Package got held up in customs. I used FedEx to ship that one rather than DHL, and they got in touch via phone/SMS, and gave the details on the charges and a way to pay. Looks best to keep the total value under $1000 where possible to dodge the fees.

Made good progress the last couple of days.
Just about ready to drop the engine back in the truck.

I need to figure out how to torque the crank pulley bolt. Torqued it as much as I can with a breaker bar.

Still waiting on parts to repair my power steering pump. I put new seals in it when I replaced head gasket a year ago, and the nut came loose and destroyed the nut and the pump shaft. Replacement nut, shaft and another set of seals just in case was $80 vs $580 for a complete new OEM pump.

Also gonna get injectors cleaned and flow tested while I have manifolds off.

Used an old tire iron to brace / lock the crank shaft so I could torque the crank pulley bolt.

I've drilled tire irons a couple of times to make pullers and other tools. Forged and tough!

This time I drilled a single hole, braced the tire iron against the engine stand, and as the crank rotated it jammed the tire iron against the flange on the end of the crank. Worked perfectly.

Damn it! Sounds like I might get stung then.
I knew I should keep orders below $1k, but didn't give it a thought until after placing my order.

Mine is coming with DHL. Will see what happens. Hopefully it doesn''t get delayed

Fresh PHH and fresh clamps.

Fresh orings on dipstick tube. The old ones were rock hard

I check measured the timing chain and timing gears. All where still 100% within spec.
Took a bit of time to find and clean the shiny links on the timing chain for timing

check marked main cap bolts, and conrod bolts for each pass as I torqued them.

I fitted a Ford racing 90⁰ oil filter adapter.
The large style filter just fits in the space between PS pump and motor mount. Had to put it at a slight angle.
Looking forward to mess free filter changes

I had to brace the chinesium engine stand I bought. It does not like the weight at all, despite being 'rated' well above the weight of the 1fz-fe

As I assembled things and added weight, this stand flexed more and more. Looking at the amount of tilt on the engine is a bit alarming!

Very shiny crank, and not so shiny caps laid out ready to go

Forgive me if I’m wrong…but won’t that make oil changes messier? My work truck’s filter is oriented like that and it’s an absolute mess every time I change the oil. I thought mess free filters were flipped 180 degrees from that?

I hope you're wrong :hillbilly:

There's no room to install the filter at 180⁰ from what I have done.

The filters always do oil in the stock configuration when changing them.
I'm hoping with it set up like this any spill will be minimal
Plus, you can prefill the new filter so it doesn't have to fill on 1st start up

I always thought that was the main reason behind those adaptors. Whenever you go to take it off, not only will the filter be full, but I would think the 90⁰ filter adaptor would be as well.

Yeah, I guess you're probably right, there'll be some residual oil in the adapter too.

I think (I hope) it'll be more manageable to quickly unscrew the filter and get a rag in there to mop up oil dripping down in clear space rather than oozing down the side of the block.

I'll find out soon enough

I think if you start with a warm engine and then give it a minute to settle, there will be some still in the filter, but not overflowing. The adapter will drain into the filter, so I wouldn't expect much to come from it. Nothing beats the 1GR-FE oil filter mount :D

Firstly, wow such progress!
Paint job looks the goods and I love the idea of the tyre iron 👍🏻
I ended up getting a torque multiplier for the job as it was cheaper than massive torque wrench 😅

For the import tax.
Same as what @Nemesis1207 said.
I got a text, thought it was a scam lol
Then an email, and had to pay via an online link for it to be released from customs and delivered.
Lesson learned.

Hmm, almost gave this an angry 'like'!

I'm gonna kick myself if I get hit with import duty! :bang:

In my experience from the Toyota 3L diesel engine, the vertical mount should help. There were two different genuine oil cooler housings for that engine, one which came out at an angle for the Hilux, and one which had a 90 degree bend to mount it fully vertically for the Hiace. I switched my cooler housing over to the Hiace one. Much less messy when changing filters, and as mentioned, you can fill the filter with oil prior to fitting. I need to research if there's a good solution for the 1HZ.

Import duty tax huh? I don’t think that applies to those in NA. At least I don’t recall ever getting hit with one through partsouq. Maybe I haven’t spent enough.

Nah, it's an Aussie customs thing. Federal tax! Fùckers get you every chance they can.
That’s what I thought. Believe me, we get nickel and dimed in our own way too.

Did you ever get the Toyo gadget I sent you?
