hey fellas,
my tps sensor on my 22re has a flat spot in it and wont exactly calibrate perfectly as per the fsm. (has since i got the truck). so i finally ordered a new one from toyotapartseast.com

anyways, i thought it would be a good time to update the upper intake manifold with the later (89-95) straight opening manifold and throttle body. as it should improve flow and also eliminate that retarted electric bimetallic air valve thingy and replace it with the mechanical one.

what i really want to know, is if those two parts are the only things i need to scavange or do i need new air box duct work as well? if so, how much of it, or all of it?

lastly, does anyone have one of these setups in good shape lying around that i could take off their hands maybe? the only local pick and pull in charleston has, get this, ONE TOYOTA TRUCK! its an 84 pickup with the 22r. so no help to me. guess all the yotas are still on the road!!:steer:

also checked ebay but those guys are smoking crack, and the classified ads here on mud, as we all know, is full of 80 and 40 stuff. not real help to us mini truckers.:meh:

what ya got?

edit: found a good writeup. tells you exactly what you need. guess i need to add the intake boot and throttle body cable to my list of junk parts.

I should have a later style intake and t-body in my spare parts collection.:hillbilly: How much is it worth to you?:)

arndog,
depending on some pictures of the stuff, to see what condition its in, i would say its worth about 50-60 bucks shipped to me

my local yard would sell the pair for about 40-50 but like i said i cant find one!!

I am also planning on this upgrade, I have an entire intake from an '89 22RE, everything, except I don't have the plastic duct that runs from the airbox to the throttle body. The earlier duct won't work, it sticks up too high and the hood hits it.

There are several good threads over on Pirate4x4.com and Yotatech.com about this. It looks remarkably easy, the toughest part (other than getting all the parts) is clocking the TPS, you have to use your old one.

You use the older TPS because of the connector. The pawl inside your old throttle body needs to be transferred over to the new throttle body for the older TPS to work. Here is a story I did many years ago. I've done this twice.

================

This conversion involves removing the upper plenum and throttle body and installing late model parts. Mine were from a 1994 truck. For this conversion you will need the upper plenum, throttle body, throttle cable, rubber connector hose between throttle body and cross-over pipe, and some small hot water hose (8mm, 5/16" approx.). The connector for the TPS will not connect to the late model TPS, so the TPS will need to be transferred from the old throttle body to the new along with the pawl underneath (older pawls are horizontal, newer vertical).

In addition to the boneyard parts listed above you will need to make a trip to your local dealer for some gaskets. Those include throttle body (22271-35020), EGR (25628-35020), middle intake (17176-35020), and cold start injector. You may also need a vacuum plug if your throttle body has 4 vacuum ports.

This conversion allows the removal of the Air Flow Valve that attaches to the lower plenum. Just unbolt it and disconnect the harness and hoses. The existing lower hot water hose will connect to the bottom of the late model throttle body. The upper hot water hose should be replaced unless you are lucky enough to receive the molded hose from the boneyard. The EGR valve will bolt up in the old position on the back of the plenum. The cold start injector tube will need to be bent slightly so it bolts up.

pappy,
do you know if the original cold start injector from my 22re will bolt in place on the new upper plenum piece from the late model trucks?

mine was just rebuilt by witch hunter, so i would like to use it, as i know the condition of it.

i suppose i could use the late model one, if its there on the parts i get.

also, did you make any noticeable gains from this mod? since you have done it twice and all.
throttle response, low end torque, mileage, etc...

Yes, bolt it up.

Bryan - I think I have the center plastic duct piece from the newer style 22re

I'll sell it to you for $18 shipped. The rubber flex pieces are shot, but I believe you can re-use yours.

Actually, it's the rubber elbow right at the throttle body that is the most important part. I believe the rest of the older parts will still work.

yeah, im pretty sure the throttle body rubber is different than the one i have.
thanks though

That rubber piece is usually in sad shape on many trucks. While you could probably find a boneyard piece, I would recommend you just start off clean with a new part from Toyota.

pappy,
i was thinking of that too. but i still have to locate the rest of the stuff. haven't heard anything back from arndog.
maybe this stuff is worth more than i expected?? i mean we are talking about 20 year old efi technology here. lol

i will try and pm him i guess.

My local U-Pull is pretty cheap on stuff. A quick look at their prices:

Throttle body: $35
Upper intake: $25
Cable (any): $6

$50-60 shipped is a little low.
