Dang, my 60 has been running just above the bottom of the gauge too. I drove hard up into the Sierras with heater going, then wheeled in the snow for a few hours, but still, the gauge was just off the bottom. I'll try that burp method, roll up on the sidewalk and see if I can get any changes.

ever replaced the thermostat and related rubber washer?

Not sure if this post fits this discussion: My 88 FJ62 is my daily driver (50+ daily miles M-F). The one thing I could always count on was a damn good heater. Until a week ago. Heater stopped blowing hot, then a few days later started overheating. I changed the thermostat after breaking 3 of the 4 bolts, but still no heat and still overheating. Has to be the water pump right? Will tackle water pump tomorrow at the earliest, weekend at the latest. Looks like a time consuming job, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I was the original post on this one. Can't explain it but it wasn't the thermostat it was the water pump. I replaced the water pump with one off Amazon (wouldn't recommend it, the new pump already squeaks) and had good heat to the heaters, temp gauge reported normal, and everything is as it should be. So now the big dilemma... put in another water pump or wait for this aftermarket pump to die?
