IF IT AINT BROKE DON'T FIX IT!

I would never send a "non-servicable" (which is what Toyota considers them to be) Toyota ECM to a third party repair shop unless I saw smoke coming out of it with my own eyes.....

I sort of get where you are coming from. If Toyota is no longer going to support the part then alternate means must be addressed. The unit that came out of my 'Cruiser most certainly was the source of at least one of my issues so while it still has the "potential" to be redeemed (before there is smoke and no recourse but a shovel and shallow hole) then trying to save an obsolete part is reasonable and responsible in my book.

If you know of a secret refurbishment program Toyota has for these ECM's please spill the beans.

Toyota does offer some ECMs in a reman program. Unfortunately the 80 Series applications never made it into that program.

These two are going to SIA Electronics. They are going to test and refurbish them for $150 each.

I strongly suspect you just threw $300 down a rat hole. There is no vendor besides Toyota/FujitsuTen who knows anything about the insides of these ECUs.

So not to dig up a deep thread but as some of you may know I was getting 83, 84, 85 codes and my transmission was skipping 2nd gear. Due to the shifting behavior I believed it was an issue with the TCU or Transmission. However as the issue progressed it became more apparent that it maybe truly the Main ECU (mine was the 170), the skip shifting has since stopped being a symptom leaving just the occasional CEL warning.

So I swapped my 170 tonight with my spare ECU which unfortunately is another 170 version, but it at least is a known working unit.

My question is this, what goes wrong inside of these units? I took the cover plates off of it and the PC board is beautiful. Very high quality and I can find no visible signs of failure, heat or anything really. It is a great looking board. So I guess the issue is within one of the chips? Has anyone dug into this?

So I ordered a 60221 from flagship one to replace my 60220. They sent me this reply. "our EPC software does not provide me with a specific part number for your vehicle. " Any ideas?

You'll have to look for a used one.

Check with @arcteryx or @slow95z to see if either has one. There are others as well.

So here's an update on my ECU saga. Since Flagship one never got back to me about being unable to program a refurbished unit I ordered a used 60221 from Cruiserparts that hasn't arrived yet but a shiny 60221 from Flagship one showed up in my mailbox. So I did an EGR delete, installed new Bosch O2 sensors in the exhaust manifold where the EGR pipes were and installed the new ECU. Fired right up and runs fine but the check engine light remained on. I drove it around a bit and it drives and shifts normally . I put the jumper in to see what codes would come up and the CEL doesn't flash at all. Drove it around some more and tried to read codes several times. Nothing. The light just stays on. Anyone ever have this happen?

If i remember right (i use a Snap On scanner to clear my CEL codes/light so don't quote me) but if you remove, and then reinstall (wait about a minute before reinstalling) your EFI fuse that should clear/turn off your CEL light.
