I did a bunch of searches and reading and I have not been able to decern what the difference is between the P/N 89661-60220 and 89661-60221 ECM's.

It is looking like I may have isolated some of my driveability issues to the ECM and need to get a hold of another one and for the 1993/94 I keep running across both part numbers. Are they interchangeable?

The one in my 'Cruiser is the 89661-60221.

The one that ends in 60220 is for California emissions and was used in 93.

The one that is currently in your truck is the one you want. It's the "good" one.

Im also curious what the diff is between the 60220 and 60221. Researched a but on here but couldn't get a clear answer as to why they are the bad ECUs. I'm running the 60220 in my early 93 and he runs like a dream, but have a 60221 as a spare

Interesting to hear your running a 60220 and it's fine. I thought it might throw codes on a non-California spec vehicle.

I have found several of the 'bad ones" available but scares few of the "good one" 60221. I did find a company that refurbishes them but you have to send yours in and the turn around is about 2 weeks.

Might try and nab one of the 60220's and run it while i send my 60221 off to be rebuilt if I can run it with no problems.

89661-60170 (early 93 federal) and 89661-60220 (early 93 California) have ECM/TCM communications issues and toss codes 83,84 and 85. Often codes 21 and/or 28 show up as well. 89661-60221 replaces both of the earlier units. If you have a 60170 or a 60220 it will eventually trigger those codes, it's only a matter of time. The 60221 is discontinued so any early 93 owner is wise to try to secure a used 60221 for future use. Yer gonna need one.....I had to replace mine about 15 years ago.

20 would have been the original design/software. 21 would be a superceding part number. California spec would be a different number. If there was a problem with 20, it was fixed and became 21.

Of course, Dan got to it before me.
Thanks, Dan

In this case early federal AND CA units are replaced by the same revised part. A very unusual event.

I have a 9/92 with a 60220 and I did get 28,83,84,85 codes steadily and replaced both O2 sensors. Since then (18 months) I haven't had a CEL code pop up. Before that it was like clockwork that the CEL light would come on on a long descent or downhill at 50+ mph and turn off within 30-120 seconds. I have a used 60221 that I keep in the rear of the truck. @cruiserdan what happened when you had to replace yours? Does the truck eventually go into limp mode or drive badly? Thx for all your knowledge

I was not interested in finding out the ramifications. As an original owner I was able to get an out-of-warranty (just barely) good-will replacement of the ECM and I covered the installation. IE I swapped it myself.

Hang onto that 60221. You will need it eventually. The first time mine did that it went away for several months before it happened again. Then the intervals got gradually closer together until it would trigger as soon as it powered up.

Cool, well I'm just glad I snagged a updated one just in case.

Well I put the new-ish ECM in "OSO" a couple weeks ago...it did not fix the faltering but it did remove the EGR code with no re-occurrence in 2+ weeks. In the process of this little road I now have both versions of the ECM to send off to be rehab'd.

Thanks for all the input on the ECM's.

I am currently running the 60220 in a fairly new to me 93 with zero issues although I have read about the problems with the 60220's. I have two 60221's that work and was recently wondering what the differences are. Where is everyone sending these units out to for overhaul?

What 'new-ish' ECM did you put in? A 20 or 21? You said you had driveability issues with your Cruiser with a 21, which is supposedly the good ECU, so I would think your problem lies elsewhere. Also, do many people refurb their computers?

I had a 21 and replaced it with a bench tested and verified working 21.
After chasing a lot of different variables I suspected that the ECM was shutting down fuel delivery and since I had addressed all the other options with the EGR problem I had two things pointing at the ECM in my view.

Just because the 21's are known to be less problematic than the 20's that does not mean the 21's never fail. It looks like the ECM was the root of my EGR code but not the fuel signal.

Makes sense. All this 60220 chatter I thought you were putting a 20 is as the newish ECM. Sounds like your trouble shooting is on point. Good to know there are some options like refurbing even with the ECMs being disco'd recently.

IF IT AINT BROKE DON'T FIX IT!

I would never send a "non-servicable" (which is what Toyota considers them to be) Toyota ECM to a third party repair shop unless I saw smoke coming out of it with my own eyes.....
