I searched on Amazon for 08885-02506 Toyota oil. 32.50 per can, two can box plus shipping

That's the 75W-85 Differential oil, NOT the 75W Transfer Case oil ...

Yes, you are correct. I picked the wrong amazon order detail. It was $56/qt on amazon. I'll go back to lurking rather than posting...

I just flashed on that thought prior to re-opening this thread. I'm thankful Amazon will take it back.

Next is a search for Ravenol 75W.

ETA...none on amazon...ordered dirt from Ravenol's website. ~ $22 / bottle shipped.

On principle, I definitely agree. Ravenol doesn't have a presence yet in Idaho and I'm only needing 2 quarts.

ETA...link to Ravenol online...ordered it yesterday pm and it's been shipped as I write this.

VW Manual Transmission Fluid - Ravenol MTF-3 75w - 1L

"Vw-manual" simply means it meeds VW 's standard...it also meets Toyota's. ;)

For those that are more comfortable with Toyota's recommendation, Redline now has a 75W MTF available.

Link? I can't find it on their site.

TIA

Well ... not exactly.

Redline states that oil is equivalent to Toyota/Scion Manual Transmission Oil LV / Part# 08885-81001

The oil Toyota recommends for the LC200 Transfer case is Transfer Gear Oil LF 75W - Part# 08885-81080

If it really is equivalent as you state, why would Toyota carry two different Part#'s with different specs?

I would not use that Redline stuff in my transfer case, but YMMV.

Ravenol states the 75W oil meets both Toyota specs.

Steve

Then use the Ravenol - sounds OK to me. The Redline, however, does not state it meets the SAE 75W Transfer Oil spec - that's why I'd pass on it.

Early information about LF Fluid indicated it may use a high quality synthetic ester base. Possibly, early samples included some in the brew. Several subsequent tests show it to be a hydrocracked group III. The latter info aligns with the Toyota/SAE Paper on the development of low viscosity transmission and gear box lubricants for improved mileage.

Unfortunately I couldn't read the japanese-language technical paper you linked from Toyota.jp.

I found one independent Toyota maintenance shop that recommends LF as the replacement for LF. Toyota and Lexus LX, LT, LF, and LL80 – specialized transfer case and differential fluids

I found a BITOG thread with VOAs for both Ravnol MTF-3 75W and the Toyota 75W LF. It appears that the additives magnesium, phosphorus and zinc are significantly higher in the LF fluid.

I purchased 2L from TRDParts.com; it shipped approx. 48 hours later along with my AHC hydraulic oil. I ordered from TRDParts.com when the dealer's "discount from list price" proved to be merely be a reduction from their internally elevated price down to the Toyota list price.

$60/L, Toyota Genuine Part Number 08885-81080 | TRANSFER GEAR OIL LF

The local Toyota dealer parts counter salesman said they had never ordered it before and stated that they use bulk 75w-90 gear oil instead of LF. Our 2011 LX570 now shifts out of Low range easily, although it is quite possible that its previous disconcerting reluctance to return to High range was atrophy-related. The aroma was stronger than typical hypoid gear oil, and was visibly less viscous than the 75W-90 that I put in the front and rear.

Redline's site says "Suitable replacement for: Toyota/Lexus transfer case fluid "Genuine Gear Oil LF 75W“ 08885-81080". Anyone seen an analysis on it?

My dealer can't even get the recommended LF fluid. It bothers me that they sub 75W-90 Valvoline. All other arguments aside, I can't see how running a GL-5 oil in a transfer case that calls for GL-4 is a good thing in the long run...

I just changed all the fluids in my 200. Mobil1 Delvac 75w-90 went in both differentials and the transfer case. Previously I was running regular Mobil 1, but found the Delvac line more economical with similar specs. I'll let you guys sweat about the $80L transfer case fluid...

Even at $80/Liter it works out to .4 cents per mile assuming 30k changes.

0.25 cents at the price I get it for.

While I’d still like to know what is special about the stuff, I’m perfectly fine with the cost.

Here is the low viscosity manual transmission fluid white paper by Toyota. We can surmise the t-case fluid is based on the same technology.

That's awesome @bjowett! Interesting to see that the main reason for LF is for economy, and that unless properly designed the LF fluid is actually worse for your gearbox wear than a higher viscosity fluid.

FWIW I've been running 75W Ravenol for the last 9k miles. Interestingly no new flashing CDL instances yet. We'll see if any pop up this winter, but despite my belief that the fluid isn't the reason some of us occasionally get the flashing CDL light when cold it does seem like fresh fluid mitigates the issue.
