Capped the air cleaner.

Where did you pick up those caps? I've been looking everywhere and I cant seem to find them or what the intended application. Ive found some thread covers for pipes at home depot that are close, but they only come in 1/4" size incriments and the large one is somewhat of a pain.

thanks, mike

The air rail plugs and black nylon air cleaner caps can be purchased from TLC Performance for $1ea., plus postage.
Email me if interested.

Mike,
If you ask nicely, Mr. JimC has what you need...

Nice writeup on the desmog. Do you happen to have a picture of the overall engine compartment after the desmog? Similar to the first picture you posted, kinda like a before/after comparison. Also, do you notice any difference in performance or fuel economy since you did it?

I have a '75 2F that I'm considering doing the same thing to. It's got most of the emissions stuff, but the previous owner had cut the EGR cooler pipe then plugged it opening with epoxy, so I just removed the cooler completely. Everything else is still on there and it runs fine, so I'm debating whether it's worth the hassle to go through a desmog if it's not gonna make a big difference.

Also this is what I did for the charcoal canister vent/breather. Found an old V8 spark plug wire bracket, hacked off what I didn't need, cleaned it up and slapped some paint on it. Used a factory bolt to attach the bracket to the rig.

I've driven the pig for three daze now. More power, quiter, starts easier and I'm sure I'm getting better mileage but, I'll check the numbers after a couple tanks.

Manny-You can get those port plugs from Toyota. They plugged those holes in the head in the FJ62's, so the plugs are available. I just got a set of 6 from Cruiserdan. Here's a picture of 3 of the 6 plugs with a handy number...

Just a bump and thanks for the part #'s

I'm going for a clean desmog. I think these are just the ticket.

Newbe with desmog question

I've finally got up enough nerve to take a stab at demogging my 82' 60. This post was really helpful in informing me about what I going to be faced with once I start. I have a question about the plugs that are used once the air rail is removed. I plan to oreder Toyota part number 90340-14001 as shown in the photos here in this post. Does anyone know what the quantity is when you order this part? For example, if I order one (approx $6), is this just one screw/plug or is it a set a screw/plugs? The photo here in this post shows a bag of them and the quantity is labeled "10." Can anyone confirm? Thanks to everyone. This group has been a wealth of information over the past 15 months or so.

Save yourself a ton of money and just go to your local Ace / True Value and purchase the plugs for around a $1 each, you need 6. Yes, the Toyota price is per plug and you need 6, unless you must have a Toyota part you can save $. M14 x 1.5 or 1/4" NPT hex head cap screw will work.

Great write up!

I am planning replacing the carb and doing a de smog on my 83 FJ60. Aside from not having to change the dizzy or side plate, are there any other differences really between this write up and a "newer" FJ60 desmog? I appreciate the help and does JimC still doing carbs and does he have a website or price list, etc?

Thanks for the help!!

Yes, an 81-newer 2F engine is very different in terms of how it comes from the factory and how it should look when desmogged.

There are several threads in the FJ60 forum w/ good info.

Yes, Jim C is still building carbs, dissys, engines, cruisers, etc.
Please email me directly for more info.

Just got back from my local ACE hardware and the they didn't seem to have anything that would work for the plugs. The largest size they had with an allen key head was M10. They had M14 bolts, but no allen key in the head, and not threaded all the way. So, can you get a socket on the head so you won't have to use an allen key, and what length should I get? Thinking I can just use a bolt? Also, what is meant by 1/4" NPT?

Thanks

1/4" National Pipe Thread.

It needs to be an allen socket pipe plug. A square head plug (much more common) will start down in the hole, but as the plug gets down into the surface of the head, it's difficult to get a wrench on it to tighten fully.

Plugs like these (see link in my sig):

Wow-excellent write up. Where did you source the breathers again though?

Cheers,

Im in process of a frame up resto on my Jan 81 FJ40. The wiring harness and everything else is out of the truck now.

I will soon be putting the wiring harness back in but plan on de-smogging the 2F.

Should I modify my harness or just tape off unused wiring, Emmissions ECU, etc?

Any tips?

81-87 2F all have the same smog setup. So have a look at the desmog threads in the FJ60 section.

No need to modify the harness. There will be 2 elec connectors unused on the driver's fender. Just tape them back to the main harness.

Can someone post pictures of on how the the FJ60 coil is hooked up to the wiring harness. I have 76 fj40 currently there is a medium to large black wire with yellow stripe that hooks up to the post on the front of the coil there is a secondary wire that splits off but at the moment I forgot where it goes will take pics in the morning.

I also noticed that the wire that comes of the fj60 and leads to the distributer is short and don't think it is long enough to reach.....anyone who has info on this please post up.
