70 series ignorance..

I have used the PDI kit for my 1HZ. And @JDM Journeys cobbled together a top-mount cooler in his 77 series with apparent great success. I have seen other folks do an oddball range of water to air coolers under the hood as well.

Nothing is ideal, or perfect. But... that is what makes this fun. Thinking outside the box, creating a new solution, experiment. Fail, new idea, experiment again, until are happy with the result. This is how we learn, grow and create cruiser-envy amongst our peers (haha!!) so they too start thinking outside the box and become innovative as well. It's what drives this community!

Yep, I have a top mounted HPD clone. Once properly sealed, it does do a good job of cooling the intake temps... But it takes quite a bit of faffing about to get it there, AND a giant hole in the hood.

If you are thinking about adding boost, my advice would be to get EVERYTHING else in tip top shape first: injectors, pump, timing, and cooling system. An EGT gauge should suddenly be the center of your universe. I'd even go so far as to replace the big end bearings too. And increasing your exhaust diameter is also helpful.

So this is obvious, but bears repeating: If it isn't running optimally before adding boost, bolting a turbo onto it isn't gonna make it any better.

As far as seats, many folks have had good luck with Scheelman. My advice is don't sit in them if you can't afford them. Ask me how my envious posterior knows. Be careful though - the HZJ 77 has trick suspension bases, which may make a seat swap a little trickier.

Or just use the 1HZ the way it was designed. Or get a 1HDT. Or get a 4Runner. Sorry to be that guy but all I see are people buying trucks that are obviously not what they actually want, then taking the jaws of life to them in an effort to make them into something they were never meant to be.

Toyota didn’t build what people want? It is also not 1985 or 1995 or even 2005 so bringing an old Cruiser up to more modern driving to me seems just a normal progression during a build. I am in the modify camp obviously. I think both ways is fine, just depends what you are after.

Nobody with a 1HZ is running 30psi, I will be on my 1HDFT in my 77. I need a big intercooler for that kind of boost. There not a good way to do that currently with a narrow nose. Even fitting a big front mount in a wide nose is difficult.

I have seen Offers in his Troopy and it is probably the best I have seen in a narrow nose but he did have to get a custom grill made to fit it!

Cheers

If I lived at sea level, I think I would've been okay with the 1hz N/A. But being at altitude and then heading into the Rockies regularly, it feels like mildly boosting the 1hz is actually extending it's life?

Meanwhile, I keep dreaming that someday I'll find a cheap/rusty jdm 80 series locally, rescue the 1hdt and swap it in. So far there's been a few rusties, but they are never cheap.

I alternate between a RHD Land Cruiser and a LHD Tacoma, sometimes, on a daily basis. When I walk up to the wrong side which happens way to often, I simply bend down and pretend I'm looking at something. That way I don't appear stupid or senile. :)
I lived in Japan for 3 years and would regularly walk up to the wrong side of the car. I would never get it right if I owned a RHD and a LHD vehicle.

I'd be happy with a 77 or a 76. The 76 has coil spring which would be nice, but I don't mind leafs in the front of my HZJ77. What I would mind however is the weaker R series transmission equipped in the HZJ76 as opposed to the H series transmissions the HZJ77's were given.

That said, does anyone know if the HZJ76, being newer and all, was equipped with the 11mm plunger in the 1HZ IP pump instead of the 10mm plunger in the earlier iterations of the 1HZ?

Also, for what its worth the HZJ77 has an identical front end and drivetrain as the HZJ75. If piecing together a kit or getting parts out of a kit that will be what you're looking for. Only Japan was offered the HZJ77 so many vendors don't recognize them or know what to offer for parts and information. This has gotten much better since when I first got my HZJ77 six or so years ago but its something I still run into, especially on ebay.

If ordering anything for the rear of your HZJ77, just get for an HZJ76 as they share an identical rear end.
Oh awesome! I hadn't read anything about them having a different transmission.

That's wonderful info, thanky. That makes it very simple and I will definitely be getting a 77 in the near future.

You are very true about the R series transmission. But it only covers the 76s with the new wide nose. Same R transmission has done 200K kms in my 1995 78 Prado with no issues whereas i had to rebuild the tranny on my 2012 76 at 100k km . Leafs on front of 77s seriously hinders the approach angle in most conditions. Also 77s tend yo be a handfull on corrugated roads with turns
I have an old truck with all leaf spring suspension, it's very funny to drive because of that, but it also sucks to drive because of that.

I know what you mean about approach angle.

I would prefer coils in front, but the durability and simplicity of a solid front axle just over comes any failing or lacking for off roading. At least for me.
