70 series ignorance..

I alternate between a RHD Land Cruiser and a LHD Tacoma, sometimes, on a daily basis. When I walk up to the wrong side which happens way to often, I simply bend down and pretend I'm looking at something. That way I don't appear stupid or senile. :)

that's what I do :-)

Charles you should not call ours the King of 70's we don't want to come off like the Troope guys....
Until every 77 Series owner installs two 60' bench seats and a 12' ceiling, we'll never be like those Troopy guys.

To each their own. But those leaf packs at the front of 77s do a really good job of getting the car stuck in mud , snow etc

I'd be happy with a 77 or a 76. The 76 has coil spring which would be nice, but I don't mind leafs in the front of my HZJ77. What I would mind however is the weaker R series transmission equipped in the HZJ76 as opposed to the H series transmissions the HZJ77's were given.

That said, does anyone know if the HZJ76, being newer and all, was equipped with the 11mm plunger in the 1HZ IP pump instead of the 10mm plunger in the earlier iterations of the 1HZ?

Also, for what its worth the HZJ77 has an identical front end and drivetrain as the HZJ75. If piecing together a kit or getting parts out of a kit that will be what you're looking for. Only Japan was offered the HZJ77 so many vendors don't recognize them or know what to offer for parts and information. This has gotten much better since when I first got my HZJ77 six or so years ago but its something I still run into, especially on ebay.

If ordering anything for the rear of your HZJ77, just get for an HZJ76 as they share an identical rear end.

You are very true about the R series transmission. But it only covers the 76s with the new wide nose. Same R transmission has done 200K kms in my 1995 78 Prado with no issues whereas i had to rebuild the tranny on my 2012 76 at 100k km . Leafs on front of 77s seriously hinders the approach angle in most conditions. Also 77s tend yo be a handfull on corrugated roads with turns

So for those of us in the states that have a little while before we can import a coil sprung 70 series, is there any reason why a prado based 78 would be a bad idea? I've heard them called 'lighter duty' - does that mean weaker steering/axles? I know the drivertrain is a bit less robust but the rest of the truck is what I am wondering about. Thanks

Plenty of info on this already. But to be fair I will likely be converting to a coil front once I can teach my kids to weld.

The OEM engines are under-powered for the vehicle size and can over heat and fail (usually cylinder head will crack). This can be avoided by taking an number of preventative measures, but it is a fair amount of work and money. Don't buy one unless you want a project is usually what I recommend. They can be quite rewarding once sorted out though.

Stick to the heavy duty models, and the direct injection engines are by far the best. HJ61, BJ74, HDJ81 for example.

I'm actually 'looking' at the one in the classifieds with the turbo 3B swap, so it solves the 2LTE issues. Hadn't considered that platform due to the engine issues, but that one has some appeal.

Looking to get a HZJ77(or 76) and wanting to make sure I make the right choice. Any info on interior compatibilities? Seat upgrades, floor mats(front, rear, and cargo). Or turbo kits? I've read with the hz engine you need a cooler kit, but that it may not fit the 77 do to the narrow front end.

plenty of narrow nose 70's with front mounted intercooler

Oh ya? I don’t see many, certainly a few but not many. HPD in Australia is the only ones that make kits for the narrow nose as far as I know.

🤷‍♂️

Cheers

I just assumed there are plenty of narrow nose 70 series with front mount intercooler's since I have done two so far and plan to do it on my new to me Troopy with the HZ. I built the first one with parts off of ebay, the second one used parts from the PDI HZ kit and plan on getting another PDI HZ kit since I now have a HZ. I guess what I was trying to communicate (apparently failed ;-) ) is that it is definitely do able.
