Yep. We are a third of the way to CO. In Lubbock for the night. Only one roadside fix (leaky heater line). Fingers crossed this thing makes it to CO
check out the comedians watching me fix the heater hose

Jim,

State workers...... HA!

Let me know if you guys come up to the Winds after SAS. I just got home and will be around.

Jason

HEY NOW!! I resemble that statement!!! :moon:
Looks to me more like CalTrans workers... but I am guessing their shovels are in the back of the Land Cruiser hence why they are holding the front of the cruiser up for support.

So it's time for an update. Bottom line is Frankenstein made it from Tx to CO/WY and back. SOB rus like a dam tractor (except at 75+mph :) ). Now there is quite a list of small redo's or things still needing finished. First I need to thank Jeff (@fl4031003 ), Ryan (@CaptClose ) and my son Mcguire (@mcguirejohnson) for all their help making this happen. All 3 poured countless hours into helping me get this rig road worthy in time for our departure to the SAS. We were scheduled to leave the barn at 9 On the 8th. Of course it was noon and all were lending a hand getting some last minute details done (AC vent, door panels, speedo cable and more). Had a few mishaps along the way which one is listed above. The T-case linkage was not working correctly. Unfortunately I never had a chance to test the 4WD system before hitting the first trail in CO. Dam gears (hi-lo) were not engaging 100% and it kept slipping from 4 to 2wd. Guessing I need a new spring/indent ball and then adjust the linkage for the low shifter. I got under the truck and detached it and shifted into low manually. Used a strap to hold the shifter in 4WD. Totally Micky-rigged but it worked:). Will do a few more posts as I have time detailing the last few weeks. The truck is back in the barn dirty as hell. Looked like a brand new 60 when I left. Will clean it eventually. Back to work this week and quite frankly don't have any pressure on me to get back on this one right away. Have a lot of things to do around the house etc. that I ignored these last few months. This pic is Mcguires rent house where he's going to school. We all piled in there the first night on our way to CO. I do like the lock out pull throttle on open stretches I use it as a manual cruise to rest my foot for a bit. More updates coming thanks

You need to set your clock on your radio

When the transfer lever pops out of 4WD into 2WD whenever torque is applied, that's usually an indication of worn engagement teeth on the front transfer output shaft and the sliding clutch sleeve. The engagement (dogs) are square & flat when new, but over the decades they wear at the leading edge whenever the transfer lever is forcefully pushed out of 4WD. Done enough times, the engagement no longer is flat, but angled, and whenever enough torque is applied, the clutch sleeve will pop off the output shaft teeth. There is only about 1/4" of engagement.

Each time it pops off like THAT, it wears the teeth excessively, making things even worse.

Replacing the detent ball & spring will probably be a futile attempt. The real fix is to replace the front transfer output shaft & clutch sleeve. Once that's done, it will never pop out again.

That was the issue with mine.
And in the future, never forcefully jamb the transfer lever up into 2WD if it's binding in 4WD. That's the number one cause of this problem. It wears out the teeth.

These pics are the second day between Lubbock and Durango. Brandon @mountman or something close) has a ton of pictures as he had a go pro. The brown truck is Brandon (said he's doing a 12HT soon :) ) and then there's Ryan doing his roadside repair. Had a shock bolt come out. Fortunately MJ had a spare in his stash. On a plane so I'm plugging through these updates. I can tell you this was one of the best trips ever. One week with a bunch of awesome cruiser heads and then another week in the WY mountains with my boys. And it just made things that much better rolling in the 60.

OSS, this is not what I wanted to hear but realize I needed to know :). I did rebuild this case but it came from a parts truck that I never ran. I will pull that case down and address this in due time. Hopefully you don't mind if I ping you for feedback as I get into it. The nice thing is I should be able to do this on the truck as I don't need to pull both halves. Thanks again for your input. Jim

Any time. But just know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with lashing the transfer lever down with a strap to the seat bracket to keep it from popping out of 4WD. That's a tried & true method that countless old four wheel vehicles have used since forever. It's just a little clumsy is all.

So I have been considering rolling the odometer back since this is technically a "total restoration" and a zero mileage motor. I took the Speedo that came with another import and figured out how to zero it out. I added up the mileage on the trip out west and it was just over 3200. Was much easier than I thought it would have been. This may be old news but I thought it was pretty cool to figure this out without any research etc.
and im cleaning the barn as we left it a complete wreck. Decided to hang the sweet

banner from the SAS. Thanks to Casey (@POTATO LAUNCHER ) and his brother for getting these made. Will start cleaning the cruiser after i get the barn in shape. After this trip it no longer looks like a new rig :). Also working on the punch list update. Adding the T-Case to that list.
