GT, So I am guessing I need to check continuity of line from - (neg) terminal of battery to frame? If that checks OK where do I go from there?

Can anybody tell by ALT pics if it has internal VR?

When I get that taken care of I want to do EFI kit. When that is straight, I want to do MT Cage, Orion and tires. Hopefully by the crawl!

i know where some 35" Firestone MT and staun's internal bead locks on 80 wheels are for you Mike. All you need is a 1.5 spacer and you would be good to go...

The person that bought Heckle's truck bought it with out wheels and tires...so we left it today on jack stands..

Well got back home about 10 mins ago. Thing cranked right up. SOB! Every other time it would not start I was at a gas station or somewhere where I needed an immediate fix and was jumped off. This time I let it sit and went to a party to come home and have it start ?!?!

Me, use a multimeter. Funny! I will try and soon as I find it in the moving boxes. Other than checking straight battery voltage, how can I check out ALT output (which I dont think is problem) or anything else thight might be black beared up?

Your last comment has me thinking you might have a bad battery but here are some tests to help narrow it down.

1) Pull the battery and place in on a charger. When fully charged, thake it to a parts store that has the ability to test it under load. (most Autozone stors can do this as can many others). If the battery tests good, reinstall and move on to step 2.

2) Test the battery voltage at the battery terminals before starting the truck. Record that reading (should be just over 12v)

3) Try to position the meter where it is still reading the voltage at the battery terminals but you can see the reading as you try to crank the truck. How low does this reading drop?

4) Once the truck starts what does the reading build to? Should be somewhere near 14v as the alt tries to replenish the battery from the start process and then drop down to near 12 volts to maintain the charge.

Of course, checking things like clean grounds and good coonections would be wise before going down this list. Let us know what you find and we can take it from there.


Looks like I was typing as you were posting. Sounds like your alternator is charging and the battery voltage is good. I would still have the battery tested under load at a parts store and continue looking for lose connections and bad grounds.

I'm also still trying to figure out where VR might be. This cruiser has a DUI distributer. Could it have a built in VR? The wire coming off ALT has a shoot off that goes to a small box that is attached to the DUI distributer. It's in pic below.

No, that's just part of the distributor. Battery in and tach signal out.

There is a regulator somewhere. Your test above proves that out. You had just over 12v at the battery then it increased to over 13v after start up. That's what the vr does. I can't tell you if its internal or external but the parts store you bought it from should be able to tell you. I suspect it is external any you just have not found it yet.

I thought it would be a lot closer to ALT.

That's just a cover over the clutch and flywheel.

Could be the rear main, but probably the oil pan. You can *gently* snug up the oil pan bolts and see if that has any effect.

Works most of the time. If not, I have a gasket I'll send and trick to get pan off.
